How should I run my first Quad?

Ok, so, as some of you know, I have my first quad on the way. Most of the parts will be here from NewEgg on Tuesday with the power supply coming form delvryboy on Wednesday or Thursday. The CPU is a B3 so I probably won't get more than 3 GHz out of it although I am going to try aiming for 3.2 or even 3.4. I'll have 4GB of really nice memory in the system as well. This will be a dedicated folder.

Do I want to go ahead and dig a hard drive out of the closet and install an OS on this so I can run two SMP clients in vmware sessions or just stick to one SMP client and go diskless? I keep telling myself I'm not a points w[h]ore but it sure is fun. I want to best maximize points while meeting preferred deadlines. I NEVER want to miss a preferred deadline. Most of the mods on the official folding forums are really against running more than one SMP client per four cores.

I hear that if you run it with the username alan2308 you always get the best performance. :D

The mods at the folding forum advice against 2 clients because Stanford would prefer to get the units back quicker. But they're your boxes and you're paying the electric bill, so its your call. As long as everything is getting back within the preferred deadline nobody is going to complain.

Now, I haven't heard that. What I did hear was that, if I set my username to alan2308, I'd emit a pheromone scent that smells remarkably like fresh hot tamales and it would attract lots of latinas with Double Gromac sized buttocks.

100pt or 300pt Double Gromac?

The 3906's have always folded well for me. No reason to believe that the 3907's would be much different. :D

Here's what a 3907 looks like, can you count the folds?

Edit: pic removed, too [H]awt for you. (I donut know what I was thinking)

Yup, yup, yup it's good to hear that I'm not the only one "late to the party" and other [H]orde folding team 33 members are getting IMO and from what I've read on this and other forums the best "bang for the buck" dedicated folding cpu.

Please keep this thread updated for all us Q6600 newbs Mr Tobit. I have a Q6600 (G0) I gots on fleabay (IMO pretty cheap $168.47 with $9.99 priority mail, new SLCAR ) and as the old sayin' goes "it's in the mail" (drats, didn't come today, maybe Monday)

Anywhoo, when it gets here I'll probably play "musical chips" and install it on a GA-G31M-S2L mobo temporarily (or maybe permanent city, I have a E6600 in it now) and try to OC' it to 3.0 GHz or better and VM the crap outa' it. (only the computer Gods know if the chip I gets is worth a crap for OC'ing) :D

Other than I couldn't seem to get my DSL to work through the board (probably a simple cure, but you know how us computer challenged people are :p) I just added a nic card and said the hell with it. So far, for the $, the GA-G31M-S2l mobo has been dynamite.

Nah. We just didn't need to see Pocatello tonight, that's all. I'm working on 3 hours of sleep here.

SOB.... this is what I get when I walk away from the puter!

All the good stuff happens when I'm away :p

Please do keep up appraised of your experiences ith the GA-G31M-S2L with the Q6600. I'd love a cheaper MoBo solution and if the G31 is good with Quads, I may try that route.

@ 3.2, my quad can turn a pair of chewy 3065's in by the preferred deadline.... get out the hdd!

I will be running my Quad on this motherboard so will keep everyone posted as well.
