How safe would you consider this work area?

My work area (at least for now): http://img13.exs.cx/img13/5526/p40800731as.jpg

Doesn't look too safe with the carpet, eh? But if I take certain precautions like use the antistatic wrist strap and take off my socks, then should I be fine? And should I lay out some newspapers or something before working? I might be able to get a (low) table as well for putting components on top, which would be easier to spot than newspaper.

not at all...

I think it would also be a good idea to set your drink on top of the case while your working on it.

How old is that dinosaur anyways?

You should use the case cover as a small table and balance the chassis on top of it.

That looks exactly like how I work, except I got some wool socks to keep my toes warm and I set my pop inside the case sometimes. But the point is I've been lucky for 5 years, so take your chances ;).

EDIT: Oh I see you have an anti-static wrist band and non-magnetic screw driver. I don't have those.

It's about 8 years, more or less ;)

I think it all has to do with your body.

I have been working on PC for 8 years and I have never once killed any componet of a PC by static electricity, and I never wear and anti-static strap, and I have worked while standing on carpet and while the pc was open and sitting on the carpet.
