How safe is OCing?

Well I just got a new system with the following run down.

GF FX 5700 Ultra
AMD 64 3000+
Aopen AK89 Max Mainboard
Seagate 120 HDD
OCZ 512 Enhanced Latency RAM

My question is, how safe is OCing? Should I try it with this system? I do have pretty good system temps... rarely does the CPU go over 43 C and the system 27 C. Is there a chance that I could fry and lose it all? Should I Overclock? If so, how would I go about it and do what?

if your a big OC'ing n00b, its not good to start with an A64 since the AGP/PCI buses arent locked on that board.

It's also my understanding that they're multiplier locked. That means the only way to oc an Athlon 64 system is to up the fsb which as Voltage more or less pointed out, forces more through the AGP and PCI slots which can cause stability issues.

I'm no oc master so I could be wrong, but until someone more knowledgable steps in with more info, suffice it to say that while it is fairly safe to oc any system, you're somewhat limitted with an Athlon 64 and should probobly just leave it alone.

Just worth mentioning, OCing used to always increase the AGP/PCI bus speeds, and that didn't stop us from overclocking back then.

That said, OCing is greatly dependant on whether or not your motherboard was made with the enthusiast in mind. Being able to adjust the FSB is just the start.

I have a freind who lost his leg in an overclock that went bad.

A friend of mine attempted to get a Duron 750 up over 1ghz with just a heatsink. He left it booted up unattended for about 15min and it cooked. There wasn't an auto shut down on his mobo, and there was smoke literally pouring out of every hole. It could pull off for being a fogger at a club.

hahaaha
my guess is that he put it in the microwave...to "break in" the silicon
but it blew up in his face:D

seems like we all lose an arm and a leg for the OC gods these days =\. *sigh* okay credit card, do your worst.

Looks to me like someone tried to overclock their house.
