How reliable is SSD?

OK I don't know anything about SSD. But I'm thinking about getting one in my new system.

Is SSD reliable now? As reliable as HDDs?

I need some convincing before I get one.

I've heard of having to tweak Windows 7? Like what exactly?

Also, what SDD do you recommend for me? Probably looking for a 128GB or 240GB. But I don't want to spend over $150.
 
They are very reliable. The only downside is that when they fail it often happens suddenly, instead of slowly like with HDDs, so you might not have time to get the data off. That kind of failure does seem to be less common now though, more of an early SSD issue (hopefully).

As for tweaking, you don't really have to do anything. Install it and use it like you would a normal drive, and enjoy the speed.

As for choices, the Samsung 830 is well priced, seems to be very reliable, and still performs on par with even the newest drives. It would be my choice if I was buying now. I've seen it as low as $179 (briefly at Amazon) for the 256GB, but it normally is around $200.
 
Just picked up a Samsung 830 myself (128GB for $99) and I'm loving it.

I wasn't sure I'd feel the a difference, coming from a 64GB Crucial C300, but it was actually quite noticeable. The extra space also let me move some games over to the SSD (No more stuttering in Skyrim! yay!)
 
Owned Samsung, Intel, Corsair, OWC, and OCZ.. no issues yet on any of them *knock on wood*
 
Internet lore would tell me to stay away from OCZ, but have an Agility 2 that's been chugging along for 2 years everyday no problem. Have 4 SSD's all different brands, controllers, generations and no problems so far. Considering how long it took hard drives to get to the reliability they are at now I would say SSD's have been phenomenal.
 
Avoid OCZ. They have a long history of poor quality products and deceptive business practices.

I recommend a Samsung 830 for best value or a Plextor M3P or M5P for best quality and performance.
 
It depends how lucky you are ?
One of my Corsair SSD died on me just within few of purchase. It had NO warranty though.
The other one is working for above 3 years without any issue. It is without any warranty too.

Wait what? No warranty's? What's that about? Why would they not offer warranty?
