How PPD would this one do?

That's a very nice, extremely high-end system ideal for hardcore gaming but not setup for folding. Folding on both the GPUs and CPUs at the same time would kill the efficiency of the SMP client. Most people who run dedicated SR-2 folders fold without GPUs as this is the best way to maximize points from the higher producing SMP client.

It is a bit overpriced however there is some excellent hardware in that box.

to actually answer the OPs question,

if you OC the xeons just right, and ignore tobit by folding everything.... about 140000 to 150000 PPD.

and ignore tobit by folding everything....
Oh sure, ignore Tobit.. right. GTFO, who do you think you are talking about?

If you pull out the GPUs and ran Linux, you'd actually fold more than what jfb is estimating.. quite a bit more :p

If that is all you get out of that thing, you are doing something wrong...

At stock speeds, the CPUs alone would do 160K+ with Linux and 130K+ with Windows. The 5 x 580s would probably do 100K ppd and maybe knock the CPU numbers down to 100K. So 200K ppd under Windows would be conservative. Pulling 1500W at full power would also be conservative. As Tobit said, this is a high-end gaming machine, not a folder. If you wanted to fold, scrap the video cards and Windows, do something resembling an overclock, and get 200K+ for around 600W.

There are actually four GTX 580s, not five.

The listing says 5 in one place and 4 in another place, so I errored on the high side (plus, I am blantantly guessing on ppd for a 580 anyway.)

GTFO.... really?

that's really not what I thought we were about. if the rest of you want that, maybe I should.

I didn't say it was the smart thing to do, I was just trying to give a ballpark of what the system would do if you used everything....

ie answer the question the OP asked.

all to often around here, we tell people what we think they should do and ignore what they ask. I agree that running the system on SMP bigadv is the smart thing, but that is not what he asked. so say both, this is what everything would do, and then say this is how to make it better.

The ad says 5 in one place and quad or 4 in three other places, so I'm inclined to believe that 4 is the correct number. Not to mention the fact that the SR-2 doesn't have enough space for more than four GTX 580s without water cooling, which this system doesn't have :p.

i really dont think that 850watt psu will handle 2 xeons and 4 580gtx.

edit: nm see that it has 2 850's

o/c 580gtx x 4 would put out about 72kppd.

Shipping kills it.

I would think the $11K pricetag would be the deal breaker for most. ;)

Complete overkill unless you collect the cash that falls out of your arse when you visit the potty!:D

BTW, just took a few minutes adding up the hardware. Looks like just a bit over $9000 for everything. NewEgg pricing for components/OS and gave $500 for the MM Case figuring case fans and such. If it sells, nice profit.

I meant GTFO in regard to your statement, not you personally. However, I don't appreciate you telling people to ignore me especially when it regards the subject of SR-2's or bigadv folding or anything else I have spent a lot of time here in this forum discussing and helping people with. Yeah, I was harsh but I was also offended. Sorry.

Not a great profit if you consider that eBay/PayPal take between 10 to 12%, depending on the sellers account level (Top Rated, Gold, Silver, etc..)

I do say that I like how it looks in the pictures. I wish he had more of them. Makes we wonder if it is a picture from a previous build and he doesn't actually have one built.
