How often should you replace your power supply?

Is there a general rule that after "x" amount of years you should replace your psu even if it is working great just to be on the safe side? Or do most users just continue to use their psu's until they die?
 
I have yet to replace one PSU, they all still work. This is over 8 years, 4 PCs. I just buy all new rigs, and add the old ones to the folding farm. I'll replace only when they fail, but that is me. Others may prefer to nip it in the bud so to speak.

My Antec whines like no tomorrow when I fold on the GPU, but I'm not replacing it. I have many other things that need buying befor I want to throw money at that.

I just hope when it goes, it's the only thing to go.

My Antec TP3 650 started to squeal one morning (an annoying loud squeal), thought it was a fan in the machine, opened up the machine and stopped each fan, and the noise was still there and it was coming from the PSU. sent it back to Antec and they sent me a new 650 TP NEW semi-modular PSU.
 
Don't replace it until you need something bigger or it no longer meets your needs in other ways (connector layout, etc). No reason to stop using something that is working simply due to age.

But definitely DO keep it clean and dust-free.
 
I think the whining noise is just a bad fan isnt it?

I keep PSU's until they just die...which I can honestly say has never happened...but I do prefer to get some higher quality parts.
 
It's coil whine, caused by a vibrating wire. It comes and goes depending on the WU the GPU is working on. If I stop the GPU client, it goes away.
 
most computers I have get used between five and seven years between myself and family. i've had one power supply die in over fifteen years of building computers. it was a 2x0 watt model in a dell dimension. first my video card started bitching about the voltage, the system started crashing. I got a free replacement from work where we had a spare pallet of matching power supplies. apparently dell had a bad run of those power supplies that matched an order when we bought the entire building new desktops. after we replaced a shit ton of them one at a time, they sent us freight shipment of replacements to cover every pc we had.

I expect every power supply I buy to last the life of the pc.

I've never had a PSU die. I just replaced my old Mutant Mods PSU about a month or so ago because it was time to upgrade (it was made before 24 pin connectors became standard). It ran 24/7 for over 5 years and was still going strong, but lacked more modern connections.

I do the same. So about every 5 to 7 years I get a new supply. Unless technology changes making the old one obsolete. Depending on how cheap the supply is I sometimes replace it if the fan goes bad instead of fixing the fan. I will generally do that on $30 supplies.
