i am currently trying to get a "gayforce 4mx" into an "emasuck" computer for my sister, however the machine refuses to detect that there is an object sitting in the agp slot. i was told by the emachines tech support that the agp slot is defective, how often do those bastards fail? btw i know that the card is good, bc i put it in another machine to test it.
(im trying to put this card in the machine as to replace the crappy onboard prosavage)
 
I've never heard of just an agp slot failing, but I suppose it could happen. Not much we can help you with if we don't know the model of the motherboard. Maybe there is a jumper on the motherboard or an option in the bios to enable the agp slot. Make sure it is set to initialize AGP VGA rather than PCI VGA. Might want to try disabling onboard video.
 
its a fic am37, i just found some updated bios for it, do you recommend that install them or not. in the bios now there is NOTHING that i can find at all that says anything about agp other than the aperature size and fastwrites.
 
I would go ahead and flash the BIOS. As far as the AGP slot failing, it happens, not much, but it does. Could be a north/south bridge issue or a physical issue with the slot itself.

If the cards good, and the BIOS settings are kosher RMA the board as emachines says.
 
I have yet to run into a defective AGP slot. What I do run into frequently is improper seating of the video card in the AGP slot. You never know. I have run into it frequently on cheaper cases where the ledge you screw down the retainer is just too far away from the plane of the mobo. When you seat the card, look at the slot carefully to see if it is seated evenly. you might even go to the trouble to remove the mobo from the case and verify the card is seated properly.

If the mobo came with onboard video, is there an option in the BIOS to enable the AGP slot? Sometimes there is no "autodetect" and the AGP must be activated either in BIOS or via a jumper.
 
That board is an AGP 4x, and I remember trying an Asus or MSI GF4 MX440 AGP 8x card in one of them and it worked, so I'm pretty sure we can rule out incompatibility.
 
Exuse me, but I just made a drastic upgrade to a "gayforce 4mx", the Geforce4 MX 440 64MB! You have just TOTALLY made my comp seem like crap... :(
 
I bet youll be running any game you want on a gf4 mx for some time yet.

3d mark 04 wont run, but like everyone says: thats not a game.


Have you tryed the card in a differant computer to rule out the card?

(and vice versa, another agp card in this machine)
 
^No video card runs on PCI. If your referring to the 2nd post he probably mean onboard VGA not PCI.

uhh.. what? Are you saying there aren't pci video cards? What do you think we used before agp?
