How NOT to apply Thermal Paste

On the plus side, Dell generally ships 2 tubes of shin-etsu paste to ensure you put enough on :)

That would actually be fine/good if you applied it very very thinly.

The last time one of their technicians installed a CPU he left thermal paste everywhere. It was on everything, case, mobo, cables, MY DESK! They use almost all of the syringe.

That's why I do it for now on. Even though we have Pro Support and I could just sit back while they do it, thermal paste is a pain to clean up.

I do like Cinnabons though. :D

That is why I never ever get onsite service. I would rather send the defective part back in after receiving the new part.

My IT dept. lets me do the stuff myself. I just need their permission to open either of my workstations first. They recognize my mad skillz.

Thermal paste Cinnabon = tasty Darwin Award :p

Tasty until it's time for a number 2. I would not even want to think of the pain your digestive track would go through trying to process that crap.

Then again, with a fresh coat of TIM in your intestine's, you could overclock it to push it through faster. It can take the heat :D

If that's shin-etsu you're using then their directions are fine. I saved up a bunch of that stuff when I used to do laptop/desktop repair at my job.

After using AS5 for so long, with its tiny tiny tiny aplication volume, I realized that not all TIMs are this way. I was out of town and fixing a friends computer. I went to Be$t Buy and picked up some Dynex goop. It turns out you;re supposed to use like 5oz. I did some testing with it later when I got back home; its not terrible. Temps were only a few degrees (like 2c) off from AS5. But you have to use a shitload. It gets everywhere.

I did onsite repair for Dell for about 2 years. Each of those syringes they sent me lasted for at least 5 applications.

I had so many spare tubes of that stuff I didn't run out of it for about a year after I stopped working for them.

I was one of the rare techs that actually knew what they were doing.

And, yes, their instuctions do suck... a lot.

Lol!!

Ah dell, how I loathe thee. lol.

Bahahaha.

This is my main rule for applying thermal paste: apply only the most minimal amount of thermal paste to rid of reflections of the die (you need to use a plastic card like your drivers license to help you do this).

Only until you have all the reflections/metal unseen as a result of being covered by thermal paste can you begin to add very small, additional amounts of thermal paste. Before you do this though, you need to mount the heatsink and die together (without screwing them in), unmount and see where you need to apply itty bitty amounts of thermal paste.

Works superb for me!

(I use ceramique.)

Might as well give these Dell guys some 3M Frag Tape to do there job with.

Wait maybe not, they might wrap the whole computer in it thinking that that are giving a "Total Thermal Solution".
