How much will value RAM limit overclocking ability?

On a Venice 3800+ and air cooling, I was wondering if 2 GB DDR (2 pcs 1GB) PC-3200 (400) OCZ (OCZ4002048V3DC-K) which runs at 3-4-4-8 timings will limit how much I can overclock my CPU by a lot(key phrase here is "by a lot"). I will not overclock for about 2-3 years, and I would rather get 2 GB RAM now than 1GB of more expensive RAM.
My goal will be to overclock the venice about 200-400Mhz, but again, not for a couple of years. Will it be difficult to do with that RAM, or is it imperative that I get RAM with lower timings to overclock?. I just don't think it's worth spending $50 more for patriot (2-3-2-5) RAM if I'm not really going to need it. (200-400Mhz overclock only)
 
My Value ram came default 2.5-3-3-8, and can overclock to around 216MHZ at 2.5-3-3-6. If I lower the speed to around 266, I can get the timings to 2-2-2-4, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

So will the 3-4-4-8 timings be too high to overclock about 200 Mhz? I forgot to mention I will be getting the DFI nforce4 motherboard.
 
Well my 2.8C has Kingston ValueRam and I got it running stable @ 3.4 and 3.6 max.

So it's not the best situation but you will get something out of it (That's 3:2 tho so nvm sorta) 1:1 maybe 300mhz OC though.

On A64, the memory is irrelevant to the CPU's overclock. Memory clock/latency/stability is of course another matter.

Also, Venice chips can reportedly overclock by a lot more than 200MHz...
 
2 gb will be the limit along with it being value, the more ram you have the less overclock
 
The memory is irrevelant to the CPU's overclock? I guess it is definitely not worth spending an extra $50 for better RAM since I am only goign to overclock mildly. It is also good to hear that the venices can overclock more than 200mhz on air...I may even go for higher than 200 then. Thanks a lot for your help.

entirely not true IMO...

if your running a divider to keep the memory BELOW or AT 200MHZ then it dont matter... but you didnt mention that so im assuming thats not what you meant...

seriously, some value VX or some mushkin (they have good value ram, and value priced better stuff... (didnt know how to say it lol)
 
With an A64, the CPU can be overclocked, without moving the memory a significant amount from its base clock rate. Therefore, on an A64 system, the overclockability of the memory is not significant to the overclocking of the CPU.

FSB/HTT speed is significant to both variables (CPU speed and Memory speed) but since the relation of both variables is independantly determined after that point and the two are not interdependant to any degree, they are not significant to each other.
 
AFAIK, the value "vx" ram is the exact same die on the VX 3200 and 4000, EXACT, just not tested. So if u get a good one then you lucked out and so far i've been very damn lucky.

They also have life time warrenty
 
hey how are you guys cooling your ram just air cooling with the fans on yoru case or using additional cooling

edit: to get your value ram to run that well i mean
 
put a fan over the ram, blowing down on it ;)

and mamma.. that's sick. you're pretty damn close to some record somewhere.. and with just 3.5v :eek:
 
With Athlon 64's the raw CPU speed is all that really affects performance. Overclocking the RAM wont get you any kind of noticeable performance increase. Its better to just buy cheap RAM and dont waste your money on the more expensive stuff.

If your going for Value RAM i would pick up 2GB of Corsair Value Select in 1GB sticks.
 
I am going to go with OCZ value RAM instead because I read at Anandtech forums that some people were having trouble with Corsair RAM and DFI boards.

Corsair's on the "avoid" list recently, yes.

You might want to give some consideration to Crucial's value RAM...Eclipse has a thread on it he posted today in the Memory forum, showing test results with some of that.

TwinMOS TMSP/400 runs about $110 for 2x512MB which is really damn cheap for "good" memory but you can get memory for a bit cheaper if that's the main consideration, it just won't be as good an overclocker. The TwinMOS is highly recommended for the DFI motherboards.

Also if you're going to just blow off memory overclocking entirely, give some thought to going with 2x1GB...the main drawback with 1GB modules is that they don't run as fast, but if you're keeping it at stock already...
 
I have another question. It looks like Monarch will not get 3800+ venice (retail) until may 20th, so I am going to get the OEM version instead. Since I am ordering a system from monarch, I was wondering which of these heatsink fans they offer in they configurations is best for me, assuming I will overclock only a few hundred Mhz:
(I will be using a T.T. Tsunami case with no extra fans)
