In the process of deciding wether to build a SFF computer some time soon, I began to wonder how these little dwinky power supplies are going to be able to power the next gen GPU's. And when you got a CPU like prescott coming out, I have a hard time believing shuttles little PSU's are gonna be able to cut the mustard.

Then I got to wondering, just how much wattage do the video cards today take, as well as CPU, HDD"s and opticals.

Anyone have any incite to this?

Someone really needs to make a FAQ for this stuff.
Check close to the bottom for some linkage. What else do you need to know?

I hope you can read that it didn't format well.
The quick and dirty rule for CPUs is that1Ghz needs 6A and 3Ghz needs 10A on the 12v. (I almost forgot about PCI cards)

--EDIT--
I'll try to create a little graphic or something but right now I'm moving everything onto a nice 120 gig HD.

You really think a desirable AGP card is 10W and only draws off the 3V rail? I think even an old gf mx POS draws more power.

Any AGP card made in the last few years will draw a lot more than that.

The AGP slot itself is supposed to be rated for 30 watts. A GF4Ti is supposed to be right at the 30 watt limit. A Radeon 9700pro has been estimated to use 65 watts.

The mobo and fan numbers are about right, but the memory wattage number fluctuates a bit based on how much you have (512 or 1GB or 2GB) and the voltage it uses.

A 52x CD burner also consumes a great wattage, and IMO is one of the most critical components for stability (or contributes to instability) as it fluctuates greatly in current draw as it spins up and down.

That pretty much sucks up the 250watt silentX PSU's power right there. Damn, how the hell do those little things even run stable, let alone oveclocked?

the shuttles have either 200/250w psu in them.. that's plenty for what's going in a shuttle. You can't really pug much in there, cpu,hd,cdrom, floppy, video card.. thats about it. My friend has an older shuttle with a 200w psu, 3ghz processer, 5900u, soundblaster audigy, a cdrom floppy and hd and his runs perfectly fine on a 200w powersupply.
