How much power supply do I need?

I have a "400" watt Ultra power supply, but I suspect I need an upgrade. Since I added another hard drive to my pc, I am getting random device drops. On boot-up eevrything is available, but in the middle of some file copies, a hard drive will become unavailable. or a dvd-rom will dissapear. a reboot fixes it. My box is not a gaming box or an overclocker, but I do have a few devices. right now I have 1 dvd burner, 1 standard dvd drive, 2 40gb hard drives, 2 200gb hard drives, 5 case fans, and just a standard agp video card and a sound card. Any suggestions based on this many devices?

what brand is the ps? You say "400W" as if it were some cheapo supply. If that's the case, then it's entirely possible that you need a new PS... But a high-quality 400W supply (meaning it actually can sustain 400W) will be fine.

it is an Ultra. I believe this is the exact one...
Ultra 400watt

I thinkthat's it, but hard to tell, it came free with my case.

Beware any psu that comes "free" with a case...

Borrow a good one from a friend or something and try it out...if you don't get the issues, bingo! there's your problem.

wish I could borrow. All of my friends go for the quanitity over quality theory. they would have 3 boxes to do what I am doing with my one, so there hardware is cheaper, but they have more of it. I can always do the local buy/return game at a local shop.

How are enrmax PSU's? It was the only brand I recognized at fry's other than Antec.

I understand Enermax is quite good, especially on the +12v rail.

Agreed. Enermax makes excellent psu's. They also are one of the only providers of high power 600W or 660W models, which I know they have. A psu like that would calm all your fears about underpowering any system you have.

I use enermax psus. They're great, and I've never had one let me down. To compare, I've been quite disappointed with antecs.
