Since most of the psu calculators are either many years old or deemed as inaccurate, I was hoping all you lovely [H] folks could help.

Basically, I'm building a photoshop machine

q6600 (until 94/9550 is released) overclocked to maybe 3.6 (i'll be oc'ing the 94/9550 as well)

6x WD caviar 7200rpm 500gb HD's (possibly in Raid 5) WD5000AAKS

2x WD raptor 10,000 150gb HD's (either raided or one for OS other for PS scratch disk)

8600 video card (possibly upgrading to 8800 at some point...but I'm not a big pc gamer)
often a few external hd's as well...

GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3P mobo

any crucial info that i'm missing here?

I want to be sure I'll have enough power to happily power everything. care to recommend either the wattage i'll need or a specific powersupply? this is my first build.

with 8600, could be fine with a 520 hx, with the 8800 GT and that many drives + raptors... I may recommend a 620hx. but that's about it.
 
and can I assume that the new 9450 or 9550 quads will use even less power than the q6600?

the corsair 620 is more than enough for me? semi-future proof for my needs? Or will i be right on the edge of that psu's limits.
 
it looks like I can get the corsair 620hx for $145 a/r from newegg.....but it's the same price a/r for the corsair 750tx, which obviously has quite a few more watts.

Any reason I shouldn't do that? If there's no issue with that, I think that'd be the direction I'll go.

The TX750 is newer, only thing is that it isn't modular and is a different color :p

If I were you, with that many hard drives, I would recommend the TX750, especially since it seems like you'll probably be using ALL the PSU connections, I don't think you'll have much need for the modular design. The TX750 has gotten just as good reviews as the HX620.
 
I'm with Citizen on this one. That, or the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad, which can be found for ~$145 shipped without a rebate to deal with now.

hey that looks like a nice unit as well. better/more reviews than the corsair as well. and I (like everyone else) f#$%^*g hate rebates.

upon reading reviews, I realize i should add that I'll be running anywhere between 5-8 fans and a fan controller/card reader. i doubt that'd have a huge impact on the power necessity, but i figured i'd throw it out there.

i'm thinking the "PC power & cooling silencer 750 quad" is for me...quite a damn mouthful though. :)

I <3 mine. Be forewarned that it's slightly longer than an average PSU. I doubt you'll have any issues with a case that'll hold that many drives and such though.

I went for the coolermaster 830 evo case...that should be big enough, right? ;)

also, any disadvantage to going for the red "crossfire edition" of that powersupply? It's $10 bucks less then the black version on newegg...and buy.com seems to be the only better deal, and I'd rather do without buy.com's horrendous customer service.

No disadvantage to the red one. It's exactly the same internally, just red and CrossfireX certified, because ATI and Nvidia won't allow both certifications to be advertised on the same PSU. Stupid, but eh.
 
Corsair's are awesome PSUs. They will actually deliver the wattage they promise. My E8400 + GTS (g92)x2 SLI setup is currently drawing less than 400 watts under full load. (Measured between the PSU and the wall with a meter) Now if you tried that with your El cheapo PSU rated at 500 watts that would result in a fire! I think [H] or someone else has pictures of smoking el cheapoPSUs iirc.
