500 watts from a QUALITY manufacturer should do. Not all PSU makers are alike. PC Power are the ones I believe to be the best. Antec also makes nice units.

PC P&C isn't exactly innovation these days. All they do are pick up off-the-self Seasonic designs (and possibly a few other manufacturers, though I believe Seasonic manufactures the majority) and stick their name on it, and charge a premium. Seasonic is IMO the best PSU OEM not only because of their reliability but also their silence (San Ace fans are great).

Just stick with Antec, Corsair, Enermax, or Seasonic and you should be OK.

how much power does the cpu take?

How much VCore are you pumping through it? The Phenom II X4 965 (older C2 stepping) has a 140W TDP and that is clocked at 3.4 GHz. I'd say 160W should be a safe worst-case estimate, though the actual answer is likely to be at least a little lower.

Quality 400 watt PSUs should be enough, but I'd pay a little premium for a 500w PSU for a little expandability.

500W would be fine if you're not planning on upgrading your primary video card any time soon.
