How Much Memory?

I've decided on building a GPU folding box.

I already have a spare Opteron 170 sitting around and I have an ASUS A8R32-MVP Crossfire motherboard on the way. I'll be picking up a pair of X1900XTs on ebay at the begining of the year, along with an Antec PSU, a hard drive of some sort and a 4U case.

So how much memory should I put in this thing? I've been looking for 2GB kits on ebay, but would 1GB do it? Also, how much difference is there between an X1900GT or X1950 Pro and a X1900XT? I'll probably be going with an XT, but I'm curious to know.

Thanks,

If you make it a Linux SMP folder 512 meg of memory is enough and you really do not take a hit on speed if you run in single channel mode (1 stick). I have 2 AM2 4200's running in single channel mode getting 750+ PPD.
If you are going to run Windows and have a GPU folder I would get 1 meg of ram (you are running 2 instances). My X1950Pro takes 7min 56sec/frame with a 3800+ (2ghz) OC to 2.65mhz and 1 gig DDR400.

A gig would be fine. fahcore_10 is using 165 megs of system ram on my system.

I have a 1950 Pro running on a opty 170 @ 2.85 and it makes ~600 PPD.....every day.
Frame times on it's current P2733 are 7:54 which is 601 PPD for that unit.

The way I understand it, calculations for FAH take place in the pixel shaders.
As far as the difference in the cards:
1900 GT should be the slower of the 3 cards. It has 36 pixel shaders and a slower clock speed than the 1950 Pro.
1950 Pro should fall in the middle. It has 36 pixel shaders.
1900 XT has 48 pixel shaders and is the benchmark card that stanford uses to come up with the value for work units @ 660 PPD.

Good luck!

Yeah, I've pretty much settled on the idea of getting a single 1GB stick and running single channel. I read another thread on this very same question a second ago, more memory doesn't seem to be a big factor in folding, at least as far as the CPU client is concerned.
