Well, it's that time again when all of us with jobs start to get our tax returns back... And yea know what that means.... NEW COMPUTER!!!!

Anyways the question is how much memory is to much memory.
I plan on running Vista 64-Bit so there is not the 3G memory cap.

I'm dancing with the idea of 4GB (2GB x 2 Sticks). But at the same time since I'm not beyond the idea of 8GB of memory.

I do EVERYTHING on this computer. Game, Photo edit, Movie edit and run as a server at LAN parties. I plan on a Q6600 (Quad-Core) chip for my next build. Mainly because I want to run 2 vertual server at the same time. 1 for BF2 and 1 for UT

There isn't a hard 3GB memory cap even in 32-bit OSes.

There's no such thing as "too much" memory. After a certain point, you might find a diminishing return on your investment, though. That'll depend on exactly what you're doing. Of the list of your applications, I can only imagine that photo editing applications will benefit from the extra memory in interactive use... but I don't know of any 64-bit editing programs. If you're running 32-bit programs in your 64-bit OS, the process is still limited to a two gigabyte (or three gigabyte, if large address aware) address space.

Running virtual servers can help hop over that address space limitation. That's probably a win for your game servers, and it would apply to your image editing work, too — but it seems like it would be pretty annoying.

What? If you put 4gb of rams, xp will only detect 3 gigs and not the other one gig.

Are you trying to say about something else(related to ram)?

Not being mean here.

Windows sees all of the memory the hardware and BIOS will let it see. It makes as much as it can available to the OS after mapping in memory required by hardware devices.

I explain the process and the limitations in the Understanding Address Spaces and the 4GB Limit essay that I wrote.
