i have a amd athlon xp 1700, is there a certain memory speed limit or something that i can have? or can i just go out and buy any memory i want (as long as it will "fit")

Has to be at least PC2100. If you're overclocking, get faster.

It has more to do with your motherboard than your CPU... Do you know what type of motherboard you have?

32 bit processors can address up to 4 gigabytes of memory, but your usually more limited to your specific mobo/chipset. Most of them around the time of the XP 1700 could handle 2-3 gigabytes. You can mix and match, but you need to at least get the same speed or faster, and preferably from the same manufacturer and layout.

are you kidding me?
mobo's always have a limit of the ram they can handle. the server mobos can take atleast 2-4gb ram
his is probably limit 1gb or 768 or 512

Your limit is probably in the motherboard manual. It could be 2GB (many older KT266 era boards), 3GB (nForce2) to 4GB (Intel and Canterwood boards as well as server/workstation-oriented ones)

Well yeah most motherboards can't hold 4 gigs of ram but on a processor with a 32 bit address space you can access 2^32 bits or 4 gigabytes of memory.

The 1700+ isn't that old - my friend has an Asus K7V from waaay back in the day witha slot processor and it can take over a Gb.
