Just getting into OC. Dont have the proper cooling right now. But I tried upping the speed on my AMD 3500 and playing a game made my PC lock up. Would proper cooling fix this or is my chip crappy and not able to OC that far? What I really want to know is how can you tell if a computer becomes unstable due to lack of cooling or the processor itself?

make sure you read the guide here or at ocia.net. we can't help without knowing details of your oc. what kind of temps are you getting? what bios settings do you have? are you testing with any programs like prime95 or superPi? what components are in your computer? etc...
