how much is too much before adding extra fans

i have a dell <insert complaints>. got it when i went to college 2 years ago and it was top end dell at that time.

it started with 80 gig hd, dvd rom, cd burner, etc etc.

i've added a dvd burner (in place of cd burner) and a 120 gig WD and a firewire/usb 2.0 pci card.

the only fan it came with is the psu fan...do i need to add another fan or two?
 
I'd say for good measure yes. One fan just doesn't seem to be enough.

Though if you aren't experiencing any problems you probably don't have to add any.
 
thanks, but wouldn't you say a fan would be a worthwhile "investment" to keep from having problems?
 
well maybe. But if your temps are okay right now, it should be fine for the rest of the your computers life.


some of us (without dells) add fans so that we can overclock more. I say some, not all. :p
 
well here are my thoughts...i know dell...bad....i've had good experiecne with their warranty so far so what i was thinking was buying a new case and modding the case. i was also contemplating a new mobo and psu which would pretty much leave me with nothing very close to a dell. just thoughts tho.

i have no idea what my temps are right now but nothing has exploded.

any suggestions on a good quiet fan if i were to add one for safety's sake?

That's what I'm doing with my computer right now. After I swap out the case, there will be no more signs that it's a HP after all the parts I've swapped internally. I run 34 at idle, 38 with me using IE and winamp and maxes out around 56 when gaming. Hopefully, with my new case and extra fans, case temperature will drop. The temps listed are ym CPU temps btw.
 
I think you should probably add a fan oir two because it is probably really hot inside and heat can lower the lifespan of your drives. Plus fans aren't that expensive.
 
put your hand behind the pc, if its hot, then the pc is hot, if its warm your ok, if its cool, then your eather damn good, or screwd...

hot meens the heat is pumping out of the pc, but there is alot in there to pump, warm, the heat is pumping out so the temps dont build up too much and thats ok, cool, either your fan is doing a great job and cooling everything down quick that there isnt much heat build up at all, or your fan is pulling from someplace that isnt warm, leaving the warm parts to get hotter and hotter.

for good measure Id add two fans, one high and back for exaust, and one front, center to low, for intake, putting the fan over the cpu, vid card, ram or hard drive is a good idea b/c then new fresh cool air hits those hot spots, but it also kinda depends on your case.

if your not having problems then i wouldnt worry about it, if you want to add the fans for the fun of it, great, then you can post in the modded Dell thread in here.

if you want to know your temps try looking up "motherboard monitor" you should be able to find it free and it should give you a good idea of your temps (if it works with your dell) (i think you can DL it here

I've got 17 fans on mine. 9x30mm in the three HD coolers, 7x80mm and 1x92mm. My case is cold to the touch =D

must make a lot of noise :eek:

as for the fans, an extra few would be good.
 
It's not that bad actually. I'm always listening to music so that usually drowns most of the noise out. It's noticeable, but nothing really distracting.

can some one recommend a quiet fan or two that i could hook up for now to keep temps down (plus newegg url here)

that is the very definition of overkill.

if you like it though more power to you :p

Thermaltake fireball is nice. It comes with a switch. You could make your own which look a little snazzier but this gets it done. This way you only have to put up with the noise when you are doing something intensive. It's pretty quiet even when running too @ 21db.
