How much improvement..

Sound quality wise, would I see from upgrading from onboard Soundstorm to a VIA ENVY24HT-S (like the AV-710) based card?

I use analog outputs only, and play only -alt --preset standard encoded mp3s.

Well lets get the terminology correct first. If you are using analog inputs you are NOT using soundstorm. Analog soundstorm does not exist.

In my experience you'll notice a huge difference, especially if you use good headphones but you'll notice with speakers as well.

Who makes that sound card you are referring to though?

I have experience between AC97' compatable onboard VIA and Nvidia sound and they are junk compared to even an SBlive 5.1. I really notice it when i'm using my Sennheiser HD 570 headphones.
