How much does overclocking decrease a CPUs lifespan

I plan to get a 3200+ Venice within the week and I need it to last me at least 4 years through college. I was wondering what is to much of a overclock for it on air.

I was hoping to do about 2.5-2.6 on air keeping the voltage at or below 1.5v would this work?
 
So long as you don't overvolt too much and keep your temps reasonable (under 60) it should last you until you will no longer want it ;)
 
You need a 190 buck CPU to last you four years?

You really must be a broke college student. lol.
 
Well while I am at school I will probably work and stuff when i can. When I am home for the summer hopefully I can get a nice construction job that pays good.
I have to pay for college myself and plan to go to med school so yes I will be a poor poor college kid for about 8 years :eek:

I am using my graduation money to buy the comp and it fit good within my spending limit.
 
It will most likely last longer than you want. I'd keep voltage under 1.6 though.

Ive got 3 years of college under me and am working coop at an architecture firm this summer and make less than that. seems too good to be true, especially with an online job id say it is...but on topic - it will be fine, just do as everyone has said and stay under 1.6v and it will last no problem, but in 2-3 years you may be able to spring for a new $150 chip and oc to be back up to speed :p
 
in 2-3 years it will be around $100-120 if not less...think about the Athlon 2800+ a few years abck....I remember it costign near $300??

I know my mobile athlon 3200+ was upwards $450 and now its liek $170....lol

I was liek OMFG!!! cause I got an open box deal on the laptop and i wanted to chkc the prices of the components
 
Yeah thats what I figure once I am out of pre-med hopefully I will be able to upgrade a lil bit, with older stuff that become cheap. But then there is always the M2(is that right?) socket that AMD will be going to.

The best part of going into medicine and paying for college yourself is that you can be $100,000 in debt by the time you get out. :eek:
 
Hm, $100K in debt for an MD. Now that would be a great deal. Unless you are willing to go to state school which should still run you over $130K, anywhere else will hurt you up to $250K. Remeber, you will need tuition, fees, and living expense since you will not be making any money and your 2nd to 4th yr summers will be spent doing research or electives. Ah but it is worth it in the long run. Good luck to you and start studying for those MCATs.
Back on topic: I have had both AMDs and Intels since the 90s and have overclocked them all (to the max). I still have them all although some are just laying around doing nothing as I upgraded. So, I would not be concerned about their lifespan unless you are willing to use something 5+ years.

Yeah I am going to state schools. Yeah I was just using 100K as a base from what I have heard.
 
Generally CPU's are rated for like a 10 year life span. So even if you decrease it 66% by overclocking it should still last 3+ years. And if you're in to overclocking, a chip won't last you more than 3 year anyway, b/c you obviously have the need for speed. So you'll definitely upgrade before 3 years!

But for your information you can use this formula to calculate your lifespan:

(Ð + Ð * Ө^3) / Ω - √ ¥^4
 
Your processor will be obsolete long before it dies from overclocking.
