How much do sound cards help?

I like Onboard ASUS MB for Headphones and use a Creative card for Speakers.

Onboard just seems to pick up stuff better in games than the Creative Card which is good but muddy after a while on Headphones.
 
Creative made a lot of cards, what you said has no relevance. You didnt state the card in your sig either.
 
Here's what I think is better than investing in a soundcard. Use optical or coax out from mb to a reciever. That allows you to use passive speakers, has DAC and headphone amp. That is how I do it anyway.
 
It really depends on what your doing.

For me, my mobo's Realtek 888 worked just fine until I really got into Skyrim (The 3d-positioning was off and voices were really muffled no matter what fixes I tried)

So I just went to the local Microcenter, picked up my current Asus Xonar DG, and installed the Uni Xonar drivers.

Works great, can't complain.
 
I used to use a Fubar II USB DAC and a Corda HeadFIVE headphone amp with my Sennheiser HD650s for gaming.

I ended up buying a Creative Soundblaster ZXR last year and it was an impressive upgrade for me. As others mentioned, some of the additional processing features like the stuff in SBX PRO studio and SCOUT mode are pretty nice.

Sound quality for music seemed better to me as well. Absolutely no external noise from the PC case as some have experienced on sound cards in the past. The volume POD they include is actually quite handy as well.

Having said that, I have never tried the onboard audio on my ASUS ROG Maximus VIII Hero mobo since I already had the sound card. I've heard good things about it, though it obviously doesn't have some of the processing features of the Creative card.
 
I have a soundblaster Z, and it sounds much better than the onboard audio from my z77 motherboard, particularly over the headphone jack.
