I plan on buying a new computer and I cannot decide on how big of a secondary hard drive I should buy...
primary hard drive - raptorX 150gb

I have about 20gigs of music
I download tv shows often (i delete them after i watch them) but not files bigger than a
couple of gigs ever (1gig ~ 10gigs)
I plan on using windows vista (15gigs?)
currently, i am only using about 30gigs for programs
for games... i shouldn't use more than 15gigs

I hope i will be able to use this hard drive for 3 years....
How many gigs should i buy?

Get a 500gb drive, they are dirt cheap now. Also you can always add a second one as time progresses.

vote #2 for 500 giger... you should be able to find one for 150 or less. I believe staples has one at 150 for next week without any rebates. You can also check the [H]ot Deals section of this forum and/or fatwallet.com and slickdeals.net for pricing.

I personally prefer Seagate drives for reliability (have had good luck with them + bad luck with other brands). If you find a seagate vs another company at the same price... I'd suggest the Seagate if you don't already have a personal prefrence on brand.

i would alrdy have 150gigs as my primary drive...

would i really need 500 gigs extra?

I can't predict what your usage patterns will be like. I had 600 GB on my last comp, and if it weren't for backing up a couple hundred gigs of data to other disks and discs, I would have about 90% of the hard drives filled up. My new comp has 700 GB, but I'm not done adding storage.

If you think 500 GB is excessive, perhaps a 400 GB? I bought one for $100 and it's the main drive of my new comp. You can still go lower in space, but the cost per gig doesn't really get better than $0.25/GB except for super sales.

Get your story straight before you ask for advice

You CLEARLY state that your primary drive will be a 150GB raptorX, we know that already.
You wouldn't want to use your primary drive as your "dump" drive, at least, I don't like to, and I think a lot of people here agree.

The reason we are suggesting the 500gb drive is because it's the sweet spot for space per $ (that, and the 320GB usually is right behind it)

I have 6 x500s in one system, cost me a total of $700

So, I'd say get a 500gb.. but, you can get a 320 for ~$85 if you look around, if you want to go on the cheap.

It sounds to me like a 150X is all you need, and you don't actually need a 2nd drive at all, but, I'd say partition the drive or something. I like to keep my "C:\" for os and applications only.

You can never have too much.

Frys.com was selling 500's the other day for 109 including shipping.... can't really beat that!

another vote for 500gb they are dirt cheap and you can never have too much storage.

< Currently at over 7tb :D
