How much difference does an extra 128meg video cache make?

Are there any specific benchmarks out there that show how much of a difference 256meg vs 128meg makes when it comes to video cards? Right now, I'm running a 128meg 6800NU with 16PS/6VS @ 400/900. How much of a difference would I see if my card had 256megs of ram? Would extra video ram increase framerate (if both cards were the exact same except for the amount of video ram) or will it only reduce hitching (like it D3-even though a little bit of tweaking the .cfg file got rid of that on my card)? Tks for any input.

I guess your current monitor maxes out at 12*10, so probably not too much of a big deal. Now, if you were looking at moving to something that supported 16*12, you would most likely want to consider the extra 128MB.

i was runnin a leadtek 6800nu 380/785 12/6 for a while. i decided to upgrade to a 6800u was worth the extra 200$ it cost me to upgrade. because i like having the games run a bit smoother cause i like eye candy. the 6800nu ran them smooth but not with everything turned to the max.

If by that you mean do they provide info like 'If you had run this on a such & such, you would have got xx% more', then no, not that I am aware of.

You may be able to Google some benches?

The video card memory is used to store textures and frame buffer informations. Resolution play a part on how much stuff can be stored in the video memory but texture resolution is the biggest part. If you cannot store enough textures into the video memory, it is stored in the system memory and this may make the game shudder a bit while trashing textures around.

That's why Doom3 has a Ultra High mode with uncompressed textures and it require a 512 MB video card to run smoothly.

If I was you, I'd get the card with the most memory you can afford and that will last you for a good while.
