How much cpu bottleneck?

I'm trying to explain to my friend that he needs to upgrade his Pentium D in order to get a better benchmark score on his xFire 5770. But I don't know how to explain it to him, it kinda seem like he's right, you don't need a lot of computing to play Dota 2 or Eyefinity 6 with Dota 2. His computer shutdown sometimes when he's running both 5770 not in xcrossfire. He has a 550w PSU. Is it because of his bottleneck that it shuts down?

You should be able to find a benchmark somewhere with a modern CPU paired with 5770s. Then compare that benchmark to something he can run.

This thread shows a Q9650 vs i5 2500k. The Pentium D he has is significantly behind the Q9650, so the bottleneck would be much more severe.

He is totally bottle-necked with his P4-D. That cpu probably can't feed those cards enough to get good minimum frame rates. See if you can run the game while watching task manager's performance tab. I bet the cpu is maxed out, which would tell you it's bottle-necked.

Also, if that psu is 80+ rated it shouldn't be an issue but if it is a cheap power supply then that very well could be the problem...a bad power supply not supplying enough juice. But to answer your question that would have nothing to do with the bottle-neck.

I had one of the higher end Pentium D processors back in the day paired with an 8800GT. The 8800GT is far less powerful than a single 5770 and if I remember correctly I was still very bottlenecked by the CPU.
