So i know with pcie 3.0 x 16 can handle 16GB/s, but how much can a 7970 use? I'm asking for future proofing, in case i want to add another or upgrade thus moving it to a x8

what traffic goes from pci-e bus to gfx card and vice versa?

one of course is the render target (eg what you see)

so screen resolution * bits per pixel * frames per second?

eg. 1920x1080 * 32bpp * 100 fps = .77 GB/s

i dunno. just a guess. you shouldn't really worry too much about maxing out pci bandwidth. it won't happen.

PCIe 3.0 x8 would be fine for a 7970, or for a pair in CrossFire. There isn't any noticeable difference with PCIe 2.0 x8x8, and PCIe 3.0 x8x8 is the same as 2.0 x16x16. In short, don't worry about it.

lol so essentially, if i do want to upgrade, i wont have any problems moving the 7970 from a 3.0x16 to a 3.0x8

Correct. Same also applies to the GTX 680 in case you were wondering.
