How modular is modular?

I'm rebuilding a old mini ATX system and have a nice two year old Silverstone ST600, it used a 4pin 12v ATX cable to power old motherboard, the new motherboard has a 8 pin EPS connector..... can I use a 8 pin modular connector I have laying around from another power supply? Or is there a risk of a different pin-out from a different manufacturer (in this case its not, its coming from another Silverstone power supply (ST1000)),

I'm wondering if modular cables were interchangeable/universal

Pin-outs vary between different PSU manufacturers and even different PSU models, so you should never assume that a particular set of cables will work with PSUs other than the ones it came with. What you can do is compare the two and see if they are the same. If they are, then you can use them safely.

Thanks, I was always wondering this, I'll double check before I blow up my new build!
