How Many rads do i need?

I can cram
1 120mm ras
2 240 rads
and a 360 rad
in my case, spent a few days triple checking every thing the 240s are going to be tight but should be ok
At most I will be running 2 intel Xeon X5680
and 4 evga 580s
So my question is are these 4 rads going to be too much or too little, how would you guys cool this with the options you have?
 
So effectively eight 120mm rads? For 1100-1300w at full tilt? I wouldn't expect super low temps, but you should be fine.
 
any thoughts of the black ice stealth rads?
if i can get my scanner working ill post the loop I'm planning on running
 
They have a high fin density (30 FPI). You'll need strong fans running at mid-range speed or faster (1400-1600rpm+) to get good performance from them.

Unless you really don't care about noise and/or you really can't spare the extra 4mm, you're probably better off with Swiftech rads.
 
The black ice stealth rads work best with high-speed fans in push/pull. The more static pressure, the better those radiators perform. Perfect choice for performance cooling, poor choice for quiet computing.
 
Are you OCing at all? If so, that might be a bit much for those rads (and fan config?). Otherwise you should be OK, but your temps probably won't be great, as others have said.
 
oc cpu both to 4GHZ +
I could maybe jam a 560 rad in the back instead of 360 and maybe if i go for the crazy on case modding i could jam another two 560 on the bottom plus the 120.

i would say buy a 480 rad x2 and a 240 rad.

are you cooling everything from NB/SB CPU and GPU?

reccomend a 2 loop set up could cause a lot of restriction.

I'm probably not going to cool the nb and sb, its the sr2 has decent cooling already,
if you suggest separate loops what rads could cool the chips and witch for the VGA?
i planned on about a month pay - bills for water cooling, so 1k is will almost work, just need to adjust things a bit :)


I, like most people, pay my own bills so I'm gonna have to build this part by part , but I'd prefer to have the water cooling done at once, even with a quick disconnect its a pain to add some thing to a loop from what i can tell.
 
I should get my case Tomorrow I will be measuring long in to the night ill try to let every one know exactly i can fit and if any thing will work
 
Just my 2 cents, but a Laing D5 with a custom top is the best bet for what you want to cool and get a big Res. You need to dissapate the heat from the loop=big res.

the only thing set in stone right now is the case, and that may end up being changed at some time, I really want a small case for this beast even if i got to cut some of the oc down :(
but ill need those OCs to run Play minecraft... :D
 
a thought did just occure to me, Is there any way to put a bunch of stacked cooling rads in the 5.25 in drive bay? I will have 3 Open to me that could be sweet looking if I could manage to get it to work. Just a thought

No pun, but in my case, I always look for big cases. :D You have to decide what your objective is.

Its a little of both, I Will be doing some sound damping mods as well as long as it dont sound like a jack hammer I will be fin with the noise. Use to use a tower fan to cool my computer and i did not Mind the noise

You realize the SR-2 has its PCIe slots moved over by two, which means you basically need 9 expansion slots, or at least room past the 7th for the other two if you're not using them. If you're going to use four video cards and spacing them every other slot you'll need an extra three slots past the 7th (or two if the last card is using a single-slot bracket, though keep in mind the space required for the water block fittings). You could maybe do zero-slot spacing with the right blocks/fittings.

Just eyeballing the case it looks like you're going to need to hack up the top panel area and move the IO cutout forward to have any chance of fitting the SR-2. Your best bet might actually be to cut the whole top and motherboard tray out and try to fit something like this in.

I won't say what you're trying to do can't be done, but it may be a lot more trouble than it's worth, honestly.

Reservoirs don't dissipate (significant) amounts of heat. That's the job of the radiator. He could use a t-line and get the same temps as with a res. The only difference with a large res is there's more water in the loop so it takes longer to reach equilibrium temperature.
 
This is a loop with a Raven case and it's not pretty... I don't know how well it will handle all that in there even when you mod it. I'd invest in a case with enough space for Quad rads and a dual 5.25" bay res with an MCP 355 pump in it.

That is a good idea, and yes I knew they had some space extra space on the top there.
basically I love tinkering and modding all my stuff and am never satisfied unless it is some thing other than stock. that's why I'm going through all the trouble, that and i think all the other cases are fairly ugly IMO, If it does not measure right I'm out ~$70-80 (shipping here and back + restocking fee) and a week or two on my build

As far as I know, there are no standard cases that can support a 4x120 radiator. The max is a 3x120 radiator, 3x140 with minimal modding on the Cooler Master Cosmos 1000.

Given your motherboard/graphics solution, I think your best bet will be with a HAF X, which will natively support the SR-2. As far as I know, any other cases out there that have 9 or more expansion slots are much more expensive than the HAF X.

ok after getting the case and psu I and measureing a bunch.
with some "easy mods' I have dicided on these rads
2X of the Black Ice GT Stealth 240 Radiator
stacked with the Cooler Master Excalibur 1 X of this Koolance EHX-1020BK 3-Fan Radiator and Fans/Shroud
2x of the Coolgate Single 120mm Ultimate Heat Exchanger, due to the barb fitting at the bottom,
and 1x Black Ice GT Stealth 120 Radiator
this is a total of 10 120 mm rads,
i could aslo add a dual 40mm rad but idk if there really is a point.
im thinking the excalber fans will work nicely for the stack rad because of the lattes at the side putting more heat away from the scond rad. any suggestions are welcome. i may also add some Scythe Kaze-Jyuni Slim Slip Stream on the top of the stacked rads, idk if it will make any huge difference.

What would be reasonable, I know little about what I need and want for w/c but it was suggested that i get 10 120mm rads, id love to take some of these out of the loop if possible, to keep cost and weight down a but, namely the 3x rad, as it requires me to attatch it to the back.
 
LOTS,

2x CPU on a 3.120 loop is light weight. Don't see the point of OC xeons but eh Good luck!
4x GPU on a 3.120 is a bit more work. Just remember that they have a lot more heat room. Also make sure you have one hell of a strong pump.
 
I personally ran a 3x140 HWLabs GTS radiator with 3 Aerocool Silver Lightning fans cooling SLI GTX 275 and Phenom II 1090T, and it was more than enough for the task. I eventually plan to install more fans on it, probably the Gentle Typhoon 2150 fans, and that should give me much better temps.

So, to answer your question, 2 CPU's on one 3x120 is slightly overkill. You could get away with a 2x120, and it'll be enough to keep things cool.

4 GTX 580's on a 3x120 is pushing the limits a bit, you'll either need high-speed fans and a really good radiator. If you go with 2 3x120 radiators in two separate loops, I would put one GPU into the CPU loop, and put the rest in the second loop. This way, temp loads will be a bit more even.
