How many monitors do you use for programming?

For programming just one. I don't really see the need for more than one, just clutters up space for something a proper window manager could do. Pretty much all my programming work is done on my MacBook Pro and spaces + expose + 24" 1920x1200 is more than enough for me. Sometimes I leave the MBP's display up and have itunes or something similar over there, but really the spaces and the like there is no need for it.

On windows it can be clunker because Microsoft is suck in the 80s or something. Switcher and Desktops make it somewhat better.

I sort of agree, but not totally. I believe that Expose is the single best recent development in operating systems. I use it to switch between everything. I never minimize any window. I just use Expose and switch to the window I'm looking for. There are many times, though, when I want to have immediate access to information without switching to the Window (IM/Twitter/Facebook/Email). That's where multi-monitors comes in. I can have those windows open on other monitors while working on my main monitor. I can see whatever messages come in and decide if I want to reply or not without having to switch to the application.
