This website is one of the hidden gems of the Internet. It's an archive of all the free software with download links to the most up-to-date versions. The update checker scans your system and tells you what needs to be updated.

I run the checker about once a week or so just to stay on the cutting edge.

I do & its quite good.

OS X has a similar app, too - http://metaquark.de/appfresh/
It even recognizes games.

Is there such a thing for Windows games (other than Steam-like platforms)?

I use Filehippo.com as my primary site for freeware. I do not use the update checker though.

Filehorse.com is a ripoff site that has a similar look but the site is laid out in a way I can see is attractive to some people.
