how many don't use floppies?

I still have a floppy drive and it gets used once in a while for silly mumbo jumbo.

Here's what I think... All the guys who try to live without the floppy, and then go looking for a floppy drive in the closet or mobo box of spare parts when they happen to NEED a floppy:

I hate the space that a floppy uses. Now one of those floppy drives with the card reader(SD, MMC, Compactflash, etc) built in looks more useful to me.

Buy a bigger case :p.

With my Antec 1080 i have more room than i know what to do with and it has decks for 2 3.5" bay devices.

That pic rocks Benny Blanco! lol

Isn't it the exception that prooves the rule? Anyways, yeah ok, so it's not so useless. But still all this just to replace a FDD.

$30+ USB keychain drives (yes, you can get them cheaper), wasted CDs (most people use CD-r even for one time use), modifying installs to work with other media than a floppy... Don't you people value your time?

Let me ask this, do you think it's any faster to go floppyless? Do you save time by not having it?

I doubt it. So any extra time=cost of moving away from it. The cost of moving away from it doesn't outweigh the cost of having it (~$8 and a 3.5" bay). Seems a no brainer to me, but I'm a fan of KISS, and not the band. Well they were -ok- but I'm still not talking about the band. :p

edit:
...no kidding. Six whole dollars.
That's not even fair... You don't buy a FDD with each new machine do you? I have a 12+ year old floppy in my current rig. That bad boy was in a 286. How many people have hardware that old in their current machine that still works?

Long live the FDD!!! :D

No floppy here. This also means I haven't updated my bios in a bit..floppies suck. USB keys are so much more useful. I also have started using ftp space in order to have my files accessible when I don't have my key.

I think it's a matter of style. People think it's uncool or lame to have a floppy drive. I can understand that, honestly, but as long as I need it for something (Memtest86, BIOS upgrades, DBAN, SCSI drivers), it's staying in my rig.

Even if all that stuff could be done other ways, which some of them can, there's still the "You never know" factor that tends to prove itself true.

When I bought my computer last summer I wanted it Floppy Free! So I don't have them anymore and my friend are making fun of me. The good thing about it is that I saved 20 cdn bucks!

HAHAHAHA anyone else think these two statements DON'T belong together?

Usefull, and yet you haven't updated in your BIOS in a while... Sounds reeeeeeeeeeeal usefull. ;)

Floppies corrupt to damn easy. People want to use them still.. Fine...

But there is nothing anymore you MUST use a floppy for. Memtest can be booted from a disc. USB Keys can be booted from. USB Keys hold more, are faster and more reliable means of storage. Their also just as convienient.

Thats about all a floppy is used for...

EDIT: Ohh yea..

I still use a floppy drive. When the day comes when you NEED that floppy drive when your PC fails, it'll be there. ;)

When I need one I'll buy one, otherwise it's not high on my list. Alternatively I can boot from CD or USB keychain, so again, it's not high on my list.

yea there is. You can slipstream the drivers into your XP Install. I do it with my Si3112A drivers for my SATA controller.

The trouble is that without a floppy Windozes will not find my hard drives.
So to be able to slipstream the scsi drives onto my XP install without any hard drives / windoze on the computer is a bit [H]ard.

Once I've got the windows installed then I can slipstream a new copy of XP.

Luck........:D

yea obviously. But you can do it on any box. Make your new disc with the slipstreamed drivers then install it.

My Install Disc (not an image) does a full install of xp, with my drivers, all my common applications, sets my gui settings and tweaks etc without me touching it once, all in about 40min.

I think I sense a bit of enmity here towards those of us cool enough not to need floppy drives anymore =).

Erik

I couldn't find a guide to slip si3112 drivers into windows 2000's install disc :(

Anyway my pc does not define me as a person. I've forgotten more about being cool than most of you will ever know

I'm sorry Benny, you can only tell other people how cool you are/were if you have at least 2370 posts.

;).

I keep a floppy drive in my computer, but to preserve the exterior look i just turned it around and put the wiring in the back. so if i need to pop in a disk i just open the side (which 90% of time is already open) and i put the disk in. last time i used it was to load some WD tools for my hard drive a week ago, and before that maybe a year ago.

Thats what i do!! You stole my brilliant idea!!! Stealer!
lol, j/k
anyway, thats exactly what i do, it makes it a lot cleaner for my window. i only use it one in a blue moon. I spend more time taking it out to use it as a test drive for other computers than in my own sytem.

I'm floppy-less.

And for things like MemTest and the countless other utilities that require boot disks, I just use Ultimate Boot CD, which has EVERYTHING I need.

EDIT: link for those who care Ultimate Boot CD

My floppy drive sits in my tool box, with a floppy cable attached to it along with a power dongle so I can tap into a standard molex.

If I need it, I use it. Its not that hard really. I keep one around, but whats the use of putting it into my machine.

Cheers,

Same here. Plus I never saw the point of not having one when they only cost $10.

Unless it makes you feel 1337 or something not having one.
i got a working LS-120 for $3.20:cool:

I would be floppy free is M$ would quit requiring RAID users to load drivers from a floppy disk. Win98 didn't need it, nor did WinME, but Win2000, and WinXP to... :-/

Is this thread still goin? So many opinions....
BTW i still have a floppy drive. :D

I went floppyless last august, and its great. With my cdr and usb keys I never need a floppy. I flash my motherboard bios from in windows, the only time I really need one is when flashing my video card bios. I have a 3 1/2 inch vantec nexus fan controller where my floppy drive used to be :))

That's funny, I'm about to replace my WAY aged floppy with an LS-120, but I need to pick up a PCI IDE card first.

*checks post count*

It's ok Benny, your cool.

Too bad my pump corrupts them in no time flat.

In order to avoid a corrupt installation of windows, I unplug my pump and underclock to 500mhz to install, then plug the pump in again.
