Just curious.

As an experiment, when Apple stopped selling computers with floppy drives I stopped using one as well (back on my K6-2-350). Initially it was inconvenient, but became less and less so as time went on. Nowadays I don't even think about them, but every once in a while someone is over at my place and say something like 'hey... where's your disk drive?'

Anyone else go floppy-less? :).

I still have mine in my pc, but I rarely use it. Actually the only time it is used is when my g/f needs to print a document.
(She does not want to use the usb thumb drive I gave her. She says it is to small and she will lose it. :rolleyes: )
 
I'm still stuck in the floppy stone age. I need it for stuff like memtest, bios updating.
 
LOL, funny you post this now.

I built my computer about a year ago, and i just installed a floppy drive 2 days ago.

so i went floppy-less for about a year

only reason i got it was for some drivers on disks i never installed for my CD/DVD Rom. And its good to have as a backup. you never know when u might need a floppy.

I only have a floppy drive in one of my 3 rigs, and that was to install the SATA drivers. But the look on my brothers face was priceless when he went to print something on my one box and realized it didn't have a floppy drive :D

Same here. Plus I never saw the point of not having one when they only cost $10.

Unless it makes you feel 1337 or something not having one.

Yes, sometimes you need to do things only a floppy can do. Hmmm, that sounds wrong ;)
Anyway i still have a floppy drive, and although its dying, i still use it. I saw a nifty little gadget a while back, it was an analogue watch that had 128mb of memory, with a USB cable. Yes, a USB drive in a watch! :cool:
 
....still the "lowest common denominator". For the eight bucks a FDD costs, I find even occasional use is worth the price.

Hmm tack 1 for still using floppy drive. Isnt it crappy to have to find and plug in your floppy drive when you need one?

Hmm now that I say this I will probobly take out my floppy drive in the next couple of weeks ROFL.

No, i keep mine plugged in and ready to go at any time.
 
i dont use a floppy, reasons:
1)i have a usb hard drive thingy
2)no bios update needed/memtest (its all good :cool: )
3)messy!!! dont need extra wires
 
I keep a floppy drive in my computer, but to preserve the exterior look i just turned it around and put the wiring in the back. so if i need to pop in a disk i just open the side (which 90% of time is already open) and i put the disk in. last time i used it was to load some WD tools for my hard drive a week ago, and before that maybe a year ago.
 
i stopped using floppies since i broke the one i had with my p2-266

cd-rw work for bootable purposes .. and now we got usb thingie ma jigs
 
I've kept it. I've got a zip drive too that I use.

Both came in particular use last year working with Minix- bootable off a zip and floppy disk- meaning I could do all my Minix work here.

Floppies get used around here a bit fiddling with different things, a lot of hardware in the house is pre drivers-on-cd era.
 
I have a dual floppy drive(both 5.25" and 3.5" in a single 5.25" bay) in my computer, although I rarely use it.
 
Yes the future is in USB drives. But you will someday need to boot in DOS (why? i don't know, maybe a DOS game that needs 640k base memory, the only of which to acheive it is to boot in DOS), and when you have no floppy... well by then you'll probably be able to boot off the USB drive. Well, you can now, if you have a good mobo. O look, i just took out my whole argument. oops... :rolleyes:
 
I don't think I've used floppies since '97 or '98... err, well, twice at school in maybe 2000-2001, but both times I lost the work due to floppy failure.

Never looked back, never missed it. A rather poor form of storage, if you ask me. Slow, unreliable, small, fragile, generally worthless.
 
Just so everyone knows, when I need to boot into DOS / need to boot off of removeable media, I just use a CD-R.

At first what was inconvenient was that once in a while software would come with drivers on floppies --when that happened I would download them online. This hasn't happen in some time.

Beyond that, other people would want files and without a floppy, I'd have to burn them on CD-R.

With the continual rising popularity of the internet (now everyone I know has it), transfering files just hasn't been something I need a floppy drive for. I really don't find any file I need to transfer would fit on a floppy anymore :).

like several others, I have no floppy drive ... and there are no floppies in the computers at my workplace, either :)

Drives some of my coworkers nuts, but I tell them to "usb, ftp, email, or use CDs". I removed the floppies from all the computers after the 5th person who came into my office yelling about why the damn computers were broken ... they were attempting to use floppies about 10 years old, and just couldn't understand how disks could go bad when: "I just used it 2 years ago!"

Sad, because a lot of people's "backups" consisted of floppies that eventually went bad. I couldn't help laughing at 'em. They don't like being told to wake up and smell the 21st century, after being handed a USB keychain drive. :D

I need a floppy to load my scsi drivers first time.
No way around it.
They wont load off a cd.

I've had one up until recently, only because old school computers with win 98 don't auto recognize my drive and I'm not allowed to instal drivers.

Now they use win xp and it's much more convinient to use my jump drive.
 
one wont fit in my briefcase (my computer case, thread running around on the gallery somewhere :p) conveniently, so I dont typically leave one hooked up. Neither does my cd-rw though.. so it only is hooked up when i need to reinstall or burn cds. I keep almost all of my programs and stuff on seperate partitions from my system, so i can recover them without cds. The rest of the stuff is already copied to image files, i just use alcohol 120 :D
 
if you need a floppy just get a USB floopy and enable "Boot from other" in your BIOS and your set :)
I still have a internal floppy which will be changed out for either a USB floppy or a USB thumb drive :)
 
It's been a good three years since I've had one in my pc. I usually use a memory stick.
 
I've had a floppy drive until I built my new machine. I didn't have enough money at the time for a drive so I just left it out, and so far, after a week of having this computer, I haven't needed the floppy.

I'll probably just buy a cheap 16MB USB Thumb Drive soon.
 
No floppy drive in my primary box, but I have many other PC's in the house that all have floppy drives.

I rarely use floppies, but sometimes you have to, ie BIOS updates and stuff like that. But I'm getting sick and tired of these peices of shit and I want them phased out ASAP, and its taking them fucking forever.

that about sums it up for me. i actually don't find myself needing to transfer files from one computer to another. i'm either doing the work on my computer or only have to ftp a file to the computer science dept. server and then i ssh into it. if i ever do, i can usually transfer it over my school's network anyway, most such files are too big for a floppy.

I don't have any drives, except one that is built into the Dell, and one I use incase I NEED a floppy drive (IE, BIOS flash).

Actually you need a floppy if you have a RAID, SCSI or SATA and want to install XP. Basically, press F6 when the startup screen of the install program opens, and stick the floppy with drivers on it in. So you *do* need floppys. Touche :)
 
I think anyone that plays with their computer a lot would have a good use for them. If you just use your computer to play games, then yeah, you could probably get by without one. But I really don't want to have to burn a CD every time I want to move a file from one computer to another. Sure, there's networking, and that's great, but chances are I'll be working on a computer without networking fully setup yet, or messing around in Linux without it configured. It's nice and easy just to pop a floppy in. Plus, you can't even change files on a CD drive, you have to burn a new CD... And after a while the stacks of CD's that are junk start to pile up, and it's a real waste of money.


Anyway, the way I see it, if you have a 300 dollar CPU, can't you afford a 5 dollar floppy drive? They come in handy for me anyway.

Yeah, ZIP drives sound good. But if I just pick up a computer somewhere, or work on a friends, it's a hassle to pull it apart and install one. And a lot of the time I will be working without USB support, or without being able to find USB drivers or something, so an external one wouldn't do much good... Plus, they're more expensive than floppy drives.

It seems I'm about the only person that uses them though, so maybe I'm just rare :D

I don't think so. Might be slower than a Raptor, but my 100 mb Zip drive with some good ZIP disks are faster than my 1.2 gig HD at transfer rates. :p

Oh, btw... I also defragment my ZIP drive regularly to keep things from dieing on it. :p
 
Last time I used a floppy drive was my freshman year (2 years ago) to transfer files to a programming class. Haven't touched it since then, in fact I've lost it I think (modular drive for my laptop) or at least temporarily misplaced it.

My new system doesn't have a floppy drive, didn't bother to buy one.
