How Many Batteries Does UPS Need

I have this UPS:
SUA2200RM2U (Technical Specs)
I got it off ebay a while back for 100$. Now I'm trying to get some batteries for it. I originally planned on getting (4) of these from batteries plus. Thinking I needed (4) to reach 48v, however upon further research the battery tray holds (8) batteries and replacement trays/harnesses come with (8) 12v 5ah batteries wired like this (I assume).

Anyway my question is do I need all 8 batteries or is 4 fine as long as they are wired to provide 48v? My understanding of all things electrical is novice at best, but my understanding is with the additional batteries I'm just gaining additional run time (from the extra amp hours). Unless the extra amperage is needed to cold boot devices while on batteries?

BAtteries will have an amp limit you can draw from them, it's not uncommon in high draw situations to place sets in parallel to deliver additional current and prevent internal resistance from dropping the voltage too low (and it has the benefit of adding additional run time as well).

Hard to say with this unit - it is a bit larger than some at 120V at just under 2kW. You could try it, and if you have stability issues or the self-check keeps flashing, then just add the other 4.

Edit: Thanks to all that helped. I found a 9 pack (why 9 i have no idea) for 90$ shipped. Mighty max brand. Never used them before, but from the googling I did. I believe there are at least non-horrible. Time will tell. They do have 1 year warranty same as other manf. for what it's worth.

I have used mighty max batteries before they are a relabler and don't make the batteries like many others.
Only thing I can say about them is they worked, haven't been in use long enough to say how they last.
Any sla battery is going to need replacement after 3-4 years.

The APC SUA2200RM2U takes eight batteries, they are 12v 4.5ah each, its no good just changing half of them as the new ones will quickly drain to the same level as the old ones making the change useless and they will last much shorter.

You can get 12 volt 5.4 ah versions of the battery which is fine, but they should have the 6.35mm terminal on them like here http://www.batterytrader.com/12-volt-54-amp-sealed-lead-batteries-p-43026.html , as for changing them they will probably last 3 - 5 years, you will find in a financial institution they will change them every 12 to 18 months regardless of whether they are on the way out or not and they live there life in a nice air conditioned comms room so maybe you should do it every 3 years to be on the safe side an plenty of testing every 6 months just to make sure.
