how many actually lap their cpu

I do, I like knowing I am getting all the performance I can out of my hardware. It's not hard anyway, takes like 30 minutes and lasts forever. Just make sure the chip works before you go crazy!

If bencher sure but myself no, kills resale value as im always trying new cpus.

Maybe you should have made this a poll? And yes, I lap everything, even my $13.50 video card HS. :D

Maybe on places like eBay, but on here I see good lapped CPU's sell just as fast as unlapped, some people even think its a nice option to get the CPU already lapped.

I too lap everthing, rework heatpipes and whatever else needs to be done to ensure top thermal performance before the board ever gets near the case.

I've only lapped when one or more components gets a "wait... wtf...." when you look at it (e.g. thermaltake heatsinks)

I do it when it appears necessary. I've had heat spreaders that aren't flat, as well as HSF bases that were REALLY not flat.

I also use liquid metal thermal binding material that works better when using copper-to-copper.

Lapping got me a 5* decrease in idle temp and a 10* decrease in load temp.

HSF doesn't go on until I can fix my hair in the cpu.

I don't lap every one...I have done about 4, and that was because I had heat issues....
My current chip, A Q9650 is fine temp wise, so I didn't bother lapping it.
I'm sure I could get them better, but they are low enough that it does not seem like its worth it
