I have an A64 system running at stock speeds. I am using the Thermalright XP-90 and AS5 for the HSF. I was wondering how long I can go before I need to change the thermal compound. I know it lasts a while but I have read a few places that the thermal compound breaks down after a while. Thanks!
 
It depends on the type of thermal compound. Arctic & other high quality thermal compounds are engineered to "bake on" to the CPU. They'll set up over a few days or weeks and won't dribble out. Ordinary thermal grease will slowly ooze out from under the heatsink over the course of months.
You shouldn't need to change AS5. You do need to keep track of how long it's been in the tube before applying it though- unlike your basic grease the components of things like Artic Silver tend to separate over time in the tube. The silver components are heavy & sink to the bottom.
 
thanks for the replies. i've had my current home built for 6 years and was wondering if the new one will last that long without needing the AS5 replaced. sounds like it shouldn't be a problem!
 
I change it once or twice a year. Whenever I do a real D & C inside, kinda makes me feel real [H]ard :cool:
If your HS is making real good contact {flat} you might not see any compond on ether the core or HS.
