I don't think they've really decided between OLED, SED, FED, etc etc yet. But how long do you think it will be before all these new technologies come out, and how much better will they be than current LCDs?
 
I hope its soon. After this laptop and the display on my computer id almost rather go with an IPS display just so i dont have to position my head JUST SO.

We have IPS at work and they are just too cool looking... I just know what will happen if i try to play a game on it...I tire of the words HEAD SHOT so easily.

Production of SED displays starts this year and will ramp up in 2006. The first displays (50+") should go on sale in the second half of this year.

I've seen no date for FED so far.

OLED is only suitable for smaller displays (<10") at this point. Don' t expect 15+" displays before 2008.

Considering that even CRTs blow LCDs out of the water in all but a few areas, only a couple of which are related to the actual image produced, expect those new display technologies to blow you away.

SED combines and improves upon all of the good points of CRTs (vibrant, realistic colours, no ghosting) and LCDs (no refreshing of the image as with CRTs, small footprint, lower power usage than LCDs and plasma displays). On top of this SED displays are far cheaper to produce than LCD displays and existing (CRT) production lines can be relatively easily converted for their production.
 
So then in 2006 decent sized SED displays (ie: 17-24 inch) will probably be ready?
 
Are there going to be SED monitors at all? All I've heard is talk about big screen SED TVs. They weren't really thin either, al least compared to LCD.

Actually SED displays are about as thin as comparable LCD and plasma displays.

SED monitors will come eventually. The most profit is to be gained in the big (home theater) display market, though, so it's only natural that this is the market they're going after first.

I haven't heard anything specific about <50" displays, but I certainly expect to see a date before the second half of next year. Assuming SED becomes the success it promises to be :)
