How long before BTX?

i'm thinking of getting a new ATX case and i'm just wondering if i should just wait or what.

i have heard that btx was just a response by intel to the heat issue in their prescott cpu's but since they are scrapping prescott, and current cpu's dont require a revised form factor, btx will not be implemented for quite a while. id say that you shouldnt worry about waiting on btx.

They're not scrapping Prescott; they're scrapping Tejas. I assume that BTX will arrive fairly soon nonetheless. When the new Dothan-type desktop processors scale up to 3 GHz or so, they will encounter similar heat problems as Prescott has, thus renewing the push for a more thermally sound form factor specification. Also, Prescott will continue to exist for another year or so, and supposedly scale up to 4 GHz, which will increase the demand for good thermal design.

AMD hasn't publicly expressed any interest in the BTX design, but motherboard manufacturers for either microprocessor firm will design boards as the consumer sees fit. I would say that it will be the case manufacturers that determine which direction the market will go, and when.

I hope forever. But that's just me.

I dunno, I've always liked the idea of mounting VGA cards right-side up, for once.

Am I the only one bothered by the current slot configurations? It just seems silly to mount my Radeon upside down in its slot. I can't see the pretty HSF!

oh thanks xonik. my mistake

I dunno, I've always liked the idea of mounting VGA cards right-side up, for once
lol me too. i remember when i was just getting into computers that just felt so wrong.

I don't remember where.. but i read tht BTX might be coming out in like a month or two.. i forgot where i read this... and they are not scrapping Precott

Also, conder that even if we don't see BTX form-factor mobos anytime soon, once PCI-E is upon us we will see ATX 2.3 PSUs, which is what most people are calling BTX PSUs at this point. So there if you're going PCI-E, you'll be getting a new PSU or for a while perhaps some crappy adapters.

Id say god only knows, there are too many factors and too much bullshit surounding it,

asfar as mounting the vid card right side up, the gpu is still going to be on the bottom of the card, what should be done is the gpu should just be put on the other side of the card, simple as that, nothing elce needs to change, and there is better airflow for the gpu

I agree. I like ATX and have no issues keeping things cool myself :)

This is true, but I don't see why they can't fix this with PCI Express.

I really don't like BTX so far, maybe it will keep things cooler, and fix a few bugs in the ATX standard, but don't think a entirely new standard is in order. BTX seems to me like a regurgitated version of WTX, which flopped, but was a better idea than BTX. It was essentially ATX, but with the motherboard on the left side, flipped up-side-down, making the processor at the bottom, graphics card above (with heatsink facing up), then PCI slots and ISA at the top, it was a logical order to things and was backwards compatible with ATX for the most part. I'm no circuit designer but don't really see why the CPU can't be towards the front of the case, with the RAM behind or below it, flip the video card upright with PCI Express and keep the ATX standard.

Damnit, I wish the chipmakers would just design an efficient architecture that could gain widespread acceptance, then we wouldn't need to pump thousands of watts into these little toaster pastries and have such fantastically huge aluminum and copper cell phone towers on them for cooling.

I think BTX is a long way from being a reality. I would be surprised if we see any real impact from the spec this year.

Ya I didn't expect to see it this year either. It's not much of a change though. They should concentrate on getting rid other annoyances instead of changing specs and starting over with more new annoyances.

Maybe I'm being a complete n00b here, but I thought that PCI-express cards did end up with the HSF "right side up" on top of the card?

I hate redesigns of universal mounting systems. This BTX design is going to make alot fo ppl mad and make a alot of ppl money. Be nice to see what kind of mods ppl do.

Just flip the shit.

Well, when you put it that way... some good modding ideas come to mind. I thought I saw a case mod that did this somewhere before using that diamond-plated metal stuff - can't find a link though.

Only issue I can think of would be the PSU fan when it's upside-down like that - you might have to re-think the airflow in the case or reverse the fan.
