How is this setup? (First time buying a NB)

I'm buying a NB for the first time and was wondering if this is a good setup for (mostly) mobility and school related stuff (lot's of programming and music). I'm a gamer and I'm sure I'll sometimes be tempted to play on this thing while I have breaks during classes. The gaming is a side note, and I would be pleased with mid-level performance with most games.

It seems Asus has good deals on their NB's. Why is it can I get this much for relatively cheap (namely, the X1600 and core 2 duo)? Other manufacturers such as Alienware would charge much more for this setup.

At any rate, the specs. Please post any comments/suggestions. Thanks!

Asus notebooks are awesome for the price you pay. You have a nicely spec'd system. the only thing I might change would be the hard drive. If possible grab a 7200 rpm drive, they make a world of difference and don't kill battery life or generate alot of heat.

This particular model you have choosen is an asus "whitebox" notebook which allows people such as yourself to configure it how you like, and the prices are very attractive.

You can also get their "Ensemble" line which is their "fancier" for lack of a better term notebooks preconfigred and built by Asus

Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and upgraded to a 7200 rpm drive.

I believe I've heard one or two people say to stay away from the "whitebox" method. Are there any pitfalls or risks with respect to compatibility/functionality that I should be concerned about? I hear this seller is pretty reliable and I will be having them build the notebook for me.
As you said, the price is indeed attractive.

Gentech is a very reputable dealer, lurk around Notebook Forums and there is a rep from gentech that posts their quite frequently. I guess the only downside with a whitebox is the warranty on the components that are being put into the notebook (Ram cpu ect) however most resellers offer warranty through themselves rather than asus if they install the components for you.
