How is OC-ing [H]ard?

I know I'm a newb at OC-ing, but I just did my first overclock on the FSB. How hard is it? Just go in bios, CPU PnP (for me), computer speed, page up, & bingo! My computer is up to 1.4 ghz from 1.04! (an athlon XP 1600+) I know I'm not changing the multiplier or overclocking the memory or gpu, but is it supposed to be harder than that to OC my fsb?
BTW, it raised my bios cpu temp from 40C to 45C, so should I go higher? No problems yet :D

Congrats on your first OC!

1) You're right, the act of overcloking in and of itself is not usually hard.

2) Keep in mind that "[H]ard" does not equal "Hard" So what is [H]ard? Good question. The folks that run [H]ard|ocp admit that they don't even know what it means but the consensus is that it refers to a general sense or state of hardware/software/fabricating/etc geekiness common to most PC enthusiasts. I'm sure there are others that could expand on this.

Welcome to the forums!

Usually [H] or [H]ard translates to l337, or Hardcore, or Extreme!

Example, someone shows you their OC. You reply by saying..."Man, that's [H]ard!"

Get me? ;)

^^ indeed :D

as for the original poster, u should try and up it some more. remember if its not stable, just up ur CPU voltage slightly and u'll be done :)

just to add my $.02, a small/easy OC like that ISN'T [H]ard, but one where your maxing out everylast bit of performance, upping the volts, Vmodds and such, lapping a heatsink to mirror shine for 25mhz of extra speed, just to hit that next magic speed, even going for chilled water, pelts, or phase change, now THAT is [H]ard (even better if it was done without supercooling - for instance, ghettoing it by hooking up an intake straight from the AC)

First, a 1600+ is supposed to run at 1.4GHz. Some of them will run at up to and sometimes exceeding 1.9GHz, given the proper cooling and luck of the draw when it comes to the core stepping you have.
Also, by changing the FSB you did also change the memory speed. What did you set your FSB to? It should be at 133 stock.

Yeah, a small OC is not normally difficult. I got bored at work the other day and OC'd a 1.0ghz celeron processor for a while. Didn't have any software to actually measure how big the change was, but it was somewhat faster. :D

You can with my brothers mobo.. Also my sisters (my old, old, OLD) system u could change it but it never changed the speed lol

Please tell me you've checked it for stability via running prime95 for at least 24 hours?

if a person has an unlocked cpu, he will probebly change the multi. but raising the multi is usually only used when u cant hit a very high fsb overclock and visa versa

Unless you are base jumping while O/C your Athlon notebook, it's not.

Uhm.. wait.

1.4GHz from 1.04GHz?

That's not an overclock.... that's standard setting of speed. The 1600+ is SUPPOSED to run at 1.4GHz, but obviously when you installed it you didn't initially set the proper speed.

lol sorry, but that's not an overclock, you just took it from underclocked to stock speeds.

This is what [H]ard is all about

:D :D :D

Overclocking was very [H]ard in the beginning when none of the component manufacturers were OC friendly. It was done with self made modifications and rearranging the MoBo jumpers....not from a list of choices from the BIOS menu....ahh the good ole days :p

...and it's OverClockers Comparison Page ;)

i definitely wouldn't call that the "GOOD" old days, more like just OLD days - afterall, there wasn't much anything good about it, longass boot times, ugly games, horrid audio quality, etc....

the funny thing is you will be saying that same saying in the next 2-4 years
lol

lolest oc'ing thread ever - i love it when people say they overclocked and they've just put their systems at stock...

yeah, but thats LATER, NOW im not fantasizing about the past..hehe:p

Cool, I've been gone 4 a while in Palm Springs, but I like the feedback! I know I shouldn't of said [H]ard, but I was over myself. I gues my cpu was set below 1.4 ghz stock, cause fsb was at 100.
On another note, my main voltage in bios is @ 1.76 or something, so how high should I raise it? My psu is a stock 350 Raidmax, so its not too good.
O yeah, b4 I forget, how far off are bios temps? I was wondering if I should keep following those or get something else?
(mbm5 doesn't work for me... dont know why, so is there any other good program like that around?)

ahh yes, changing the voltage on a celeron slot1 chip by taping pins with scotch tape, homebrew goldfinger devices for Athlon SlotA chips. How many here overclocked thier 386 computers?

oK, so maybe it was harder back then. But when I look at your examples, I've only been into this year and a half, it sure reminds me of running to autozone to get defogger kit. Both to unlock my palomino via the L1 bridges and more recently fsb modding the chip via the pins.

Well, the more we are done with fudging stuff the more time we can practice skills that even have some value outside of OC... like voltmodding and soldering skillz.

Anyone who says it's easy... well there is skill involved. There will be luck also but give two people turns with the same hardware (physically the same actual piece) and there will be be a clear winner. Is it hard? Hell, some OC'ers are doing electrical work, refridgeration work. You can be a moderate bumper of speeds, but there are plenty of avenues for more and more learning.

[corn][corn] So the question isn't how hard is OCing but how [H]ard are you? [/corn][/corn]

I never use fake html tags so I double nested them. Sure am in a weird mood. :D

I wonder if I'd be considered [H]ard or tupid for running my 2.4C @ 1.775V on air cooling :p.

[h]ard as quoted by others is:

"[h]ard is a road, not a destination"

so in my opinion it is:

[H]ard is the process of enlighten and knowledge of hardware. It’s about taking your hardware to the extreme, just to the point of failure, were it still works, and doesn’t fail. But performs the task needed by it faster or quieter than what it was designed for. It’s sharing that information with your peers, information that will make each others system performs better and stable. It’s a family, a set of values, a set of goals, respect.

[H] Is about living life at another pace, it’s about going farther than the rest, achieving a little bit more. Is a community of people of different backgrounds, ages, raze, sex and believes, that share the same set of rules and commitment, that have to do with everything in life.

Just a note... don't o/c with that raidmax... it'll bring down your entire system :p

I've had 2 of those things die out on me before going to antec... And i've had one of my true powers' fans die, but it still ran strong... crazy... My warranty was honored n/p though, so all in all i've gotta say i'm satisfied..

OC'ing sucks when you kill a 2400+ when installing a slk800a.

Heh.. crappy mistake.. but a nice forced upgrade (wasn't at the time).
