How is my 3870 OC ?

I decided to overclock my hd 3870. It got it to around 825 core 2325 mem (effective). Is this any good ? should i try to push it farther ? It's completely stable at the moment.
 
I originally got mine to 850/2700, but it turned out to not be stable due to my PoS power supply.

You on the other hand have a better PS than me. You can get more if you manually force the fan to run higher, or you can keep what you have now and be content.

Even with an increase in fan speed, your probably not going to get much more than 25 on core and mem. If it was me I'd stick with what you have now and call it a day.

Edit: You should be able to push your mem to 1250 (2500) easily.
 
thanks, my fan is already constantly running at 80 %. ill try to see if i can push any more out of it. Im jsut kinda wary about overclocking graphics cards. the first one i tried it on, it died, the oc'ing didnt kill it, but something did. the second one i had didnt oc more than 10 mhz on memory or gpu.
 
I've just done a lil OCing on mine as it's at 830 on the core with what seems to be quite a bit left in it. But as far as I can tell the fan is forced to 100% or something near that by the vid card bios as it's pretty loud and never slows down. The temps only get into the 50's C when running 3DMark benches. I'd use ATITool but it's a pain in the rear with Vista. I'll proally use it to check my final OC when I'm done.

If it's stable, keep trying higher till you start seeing artifacts then back it down till their gone. That's the way I always do it, and it seems to work well for me.


The Zalman VF-900's do fit on the card and NewEgg has the non led ones for like $30 something. So if temps are holding you back that should give a nice boost to your OCing potential for minimal cash.
 
my temps never really go above 55, and it idle around 49-50. Im really happy with the stock cooler. ATI tool wont even run :p. ive tried 3 different versions, and none of them run under xp. I really prefer rivatuner over ati tool. a lot more options.

IMO save the $30 toward your next card. The difference between 850/1350 and stock is probably not even noticeable on most (though not all) games.
 
ok, i got it to 850 core and 3500 mem. im leaving it there. it does boost my performace a little. is 9002 3d marks decent for my system. the only thing thats bad is the cpu test.

I like ATITool for the artifact detection fuzzy cube thing. As it really does make it much easier to see any artifacting going on. And I've never found another program that gets a gpu to run as hot for a worst case temp reading.

That and I've been using it since my 9800 Pro that I got years ago so I figure if it does what I need I'll keep using it. Riva does have some neat features like the memory usage graphs and all that stuff, but I've never really had a need for all the extras.


toddw - I suggest the VF-900 due to it's fairly universal mounting to just about any graphics card out there. So chances are you'll be able to use it on your next graphics card as well. I haven't transfered mine to my 3870 yet, but it'll be the 3rd vid card I've had it on, so as long as you don't throw out the stock cooler you can just keep using it till it dies most likely.
