How important is VRM to 2500K overclocking?

Just picked up a 2500k, and this board

But there seems to be some claims floating around, that you need ridiculous things like 24 phase power to overclock worth a darn. Any truth to this? It would seem the above board only has 6.

Also, I cant figure out the difference between Z68X and Z68A

Very, you might be able to overclock on that board but I wouldn't attempt it. The mosfets are underpowered and some aren't even sinked which means they will run hot when overclocking. The heat can further effect the stability of the voltage that is being put out. That board only has a 4-pin power connector.

You don't need an over the top voltage regulation system like we see on some motherboards unless you are basically benchmarking with sub-zero cooling. I had really good luck with overclocking on my cheap Gigabyte P55a UD3. Sadly though it looks like Gigabyte really cheaped out on their lower end 1155 boards.

If you are trying to save a few bucks I would look into an MSI board. Is there any reason that you need a Z68 over a P67?

Im running SLI, so that kind of limits my options, and in my price range (sub $150) that seemed the most feature rich. The other option was a comparable p67 and a comparable msi, but they didnt support sli for some reason despite having the slots.

I don't recall too many Intel motherboards suffering from overheating mosfet's. I've seen AMD boards explode dropping hex cores in but never an intel board.

i can always sink the mosfets which shoiuld help. Ive got a bunch of spare high quality sinks around.

I would hold out for an MSI P67A-GD53. You should be able to find one for around $150.
