Hi guys,
I'm considering rearranging some of the hardware in my development lab.
I've got two Hyper-V servers that I'm concerned with. Right now both have a single WD Black (SATA2) drive as the Host spindle, and a variety of other disks for my virtual machine storage. Two of the drives are identical WD Green (SATA1) disks.
I'm considering moving the virtual disk storage to iSCSI (Starwind) and to store the LUNs on a striped array of disks.
What I'm wondering is, would I expect a drop in performance by switching the Hyper-V hosts' OS spindles to the SATA1 drives so that I could stripe the SATA2 drives and expose them over iSCSI? (Assume that I'm not worried about redundancy.)
Similarly, would I see a noticable improvement in VM responsiveness by exposing a striped array of SATA2 spindles compared to SATA1 spindles (assuming spindle counts/configuration are identical)? (I say noticable because obviously theoretically more bandwidth available on the SATA2 drives...)
