I am curious of what is the danger zone on cpu temp? I am currently using an A64 3000+ and at full load it is pushing 50c? Is this to hot?

I think 50c is about as hot as you would like to see it. but everyone has a different feel for what's safe for them.

All my CPU's overheat alarms are set to go off at 60C.
It possible for them to go off in the summer when the temp in my cottage hits +40C.
But tend not to hit 65C which is the shut down temp.

Its all a question of how far above ambient you are running.
I try a keep all my CPU's within 20C of the local air temp.
And I think if your above air temp + 30C then its too hot.

Luck........ :D

Eek, I've got problems then. I've been running a 4800+ in an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe with a Zalman 7700CAl and it idles at 38c but when I'm running Prime95 full bore on both cores it heats up to 63c. Any idea what might cause this? I have a Sonata II case with a pair of 120mm fans, plus the 120mm fan on the heatsink. The computer isn't acting unstable, but with this gear I shouldn't be hitting these temps!

Yeah cuz I always hit the shut-down level when i play high performance games

only thing i can think of is maybe try re-seating your heatsink.

livewirec,
63C is high.
Your setup sounds good. Try the simple stuff first. Pull the heatsink, and lap the base to 600-800 grit on a flat surface. Re-install with some Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste.

With a 1.53ghz Ahtlon, an old copper hedgehog heatsink, 60mm sunon fan, I would occaisionally see 50-53C on a hot summers day. Processing was noticably slower, though not unstable. Most of the time it was around 42C. Low 40's is my personal comfort zone. Understand, it's just what I've become used to seeing. My latest setup is running 36-38C. 42C full load running burn in.AMD 4200 X2, Asus A8N32, blah blah, etc. Some things are eternal. Heat kills speed/efficiency. If your reporting software is accurate, you've got some major room for improvement. Like I said, try the simple stuff first.

Good luck

I'm using Shin Etsu G-751 thermal paste which has never given me problems before, so I don't think the TIM is to blame. I stayed home from work today due to a bunk back and have been troubleshooting my system, and I'm thinking I may have a board problem. I plugged in a RevE FX55 I had and it too was running at the same temps, where beforehand when I was originally using it it'd stay between 38-49c. I also tried using my big Thermaltake tower cooler, with only a degree's difference between it and the 7700CAl. Could something board-related cause these temps, or could it be that it's reporting incorrectly? This is driving me nuts, as it's my main gaming machine and I'd hate for it to die a premature death to heat failure.

livewirec,

The thing that occurs to me is something may have changed in your system airflow. Check your fans, blow out the power supply. A good cleaning has been good for 3C for me in the past. Have you changed locations? It sounds a little odd, since you tried a known CPU, got the same thing.

Good luck
