How fast is RAID 0 supposed to be?

My board is SATA150. I have 2 WD 80's that are SATA II. I didn't change anything on them, they just worked. I have it setup with 16k cluster size...

When I set it up, it combined the sizes to 154 gigs or so. I thought it was supposed to be just a really fast 80 gig drive...

I'm not really a benchmark junkie, so I never tested my PATA drives. So, I have nothing to compare this to. This is my first time with both SATA and RAID.

Are those numbers right? (that test is with the larger block size, like 32mb or something)

Speeds look about right for a raid0 of those drives. You need to read up a bit more on raid though to understand what's going one.

Raid 0 combines both drives and splits the data onto them in stripes so it can read a large file from both drives at once.

hey man thanks for the info. So far I don't really notice much difference... there are some small things, but nothing major. I don't play many games that have those huge maps or anything like BF2...

Then you're probably taking a small performance hit from raid 0. Raid zero really only shines with large, single file transfers, it doesn't handle random access with lots of small files well.

Looks right to me, and Defakto is right, i use it on my media center and bootup is not that great, but striping tv shows in mpeg2 flys, and i am working with 8gbs per show....
