How fast can a cpu burn up

So i wanted to see if i hooked up my system right so i started my comp with no heatsink. it came up for like 1 second. and then the system turned off. then i plugged in a cpu fan ( didn't put i ton the cpu) and started it again. nothing cam on screen and the system turned off after 2 or 3 seconds. and beeping a few times. Like a siren. Is this bad?
 
lol... If you want to test anything, do it without the CPU. Why on earth would you ever want to start it without the heatsink?
 
cuse i'm a moron. So i touch the cpu and its fairly warm. Not burning up anything. So the question is. is the mother board smart enough to tell that i'm moron and turn off. OR can the cpu just burn right the F up in a matter of 3-5 seconds.?!?!?!?
 
reset the bios and see if she boots with the heatsink on/

wish i could. My heatsink won't go on cuse i broke one of the clips. I have to buy a new heatsink tommorow...... My cpu is 3.4 p4...so ya it better not have burned up.
 
Chances are good it didn't burn up. All intel processors since the pentium 3 instantly throttle and/or shut off if the temperature exceeds the thermal design point, even without a heatsink. If you did somehow fry your cpu that way, it would have happened within a few seconds and there would probably be visible burn marks on the IHS. Linky goodness
 
Welcome to the club. I know an Athlon Tbird core could go up in smoke (literally) within 3 sec of power up. I keep it nailed to the wall as a "next time don't be lazy, stupid" reminder
 
The Pentium 4 would have throttled down to reduce heat. I wouldn't worry about it. Reset your CMOS, put everything back together and go from there.

It didn't burn. I've pushed a 3.4 Prescott to near 100% throttling at high temp in a moment of foolishness (4.1 on air, lol) and it's still running quite fine after that abuse.
 
A while back i was asked to test the P4's throttle and shutoff points...what took place is me in a small white room with a 2.4a,2.4b,and a 2.4c...put each 1 in a stock intel 865 mobo and turn it on untill i get a chip to fail..after 10 cycles on each chip they were still in 100% shape,all of them booted after the 10 cycles and none of them had any damage. Intel got smart :)
 
so basicaly i'm safe. now if i can just find a dam heatsink for a 775 socket

Athlon64's have similiar thermal protection measures as Intel has, so the short answer is, no, they keep your stupidness from costing you money (well, at least the stupidness of turning on a computer without a heatsink/fan on the CPU; other stupidness, you're on your own :D)

Yup..thats pretty much the just of it.
 
What cpu did you burn up? an AMD. i've ran a few P4's with no heatsinks and they dont get hurt??
 
For the most part yes thats true..but no..a p4 can still burn up..it just wont happen by removing the hsf then turning it on.
