I have a space next to my desk that would be perfect to put my computer, but I'm not sure how much space my computer needs for proper cooling. How many inches away should objects (like a wall, or side of a desk) be from the side of a computer for adequate cooling? That is, how much space does case need to give to the CPU fan.

A small space doesnt matter as long as there is adequate air flow.

If there is no general airflow in the area and air is allowed to escape and flow into the pc (ie its not a boxed in area) then it should be fine. This assumes that the heat can easily dissipate into the living area and also assumes the room isnt hot to start with.

If your desk hangs over the top of the pc and helps create a restriction to upward airflow, it would be wise to pull the desk away from the wall an inch or 2 to aid air flow.
I would keep the back of the pc at least 4 inches from the back wall more if you can manage it.

Just make sure its not up against a wall so the air has room to exhaust and circulate around the room. Also make sure nothing is blocking the intake area.
