How far pump from a reservoir?

I connect a pump to a reservoir by 12 inches hose. Is it ok or it need to be right at the bottom of the reservoir ?
 
As long as the pump isn't above the reservoir it should be fine. (It should ideally be slightly lower than the reservoir).
 
Generally you want the pump lower than the res and pulling water from it. This makes sure there is no trouble priming the pump.
 
As long as the pump is below the reservoir and the hose does not travel upwards at any point, it doesn't matter the distance.
 
As long as you have sufficient head pressure and your pump is lower than the res, the length of the run and order of other components quite literally doesn't matter. Most pumps these days are combo pump/res units anyway so it really doesn't matter where you put it.
