My CPU temps are 40 *c idle case temps 29-33 idle with a p4 3.2GHZ/800

Im wondering how far I can take it on stock 1.55 voltage and timings...


3.4 is my main goal... and is it safe to leave it there.... I took it to 3360 but I was kinda scared so I put it back to stock.... will that mini oc hurt anything.... if moved to 3408/856

trial and error, test it if its stable then ur ok if not then take it down a little bit
 
i have same temps as you. i can get mine to 3.5(no vcore adjustments) and its rock solid. probably more if i adjust vcore.

so yours should be stable at 3.4 easily.

dont see y u need to overclock it, my system runs every game i throw at it. and yours is similar in performance.

You should be safe in pushing it to 3.4. Most CPUs that I have worked with will push ~10% without beaking a sweat. For you to reach 3.4Ghz you will need to raise the FSB to 213. That is just over 5% which really should be nothing.

Run some benchmarks after you overclock it a bit and see if it is stable. I usually run Prime95 (or a command line version of SETI@Home) and Loop 3DMark01 overnight. This will let you know if you are OK. Try this a few nights in a row and everyday you play with it up the FSB a little (like 5 Mhz at a time). After you find the limit to your overclocking (if you do now want to increase the VCORE) back it back down 2Mhz and then run that same benchmark for a full 24 hours. This will allow you to see if heat is going to be an issue because, at least where I live, it is cooler in the house at night than during the day.

P4 CPUs can be run into the high 60s (under load) before I would even think about heat being an issue. Also P4 CPUs have hardware throttling so if they get too hot they will slow down, or just shut the machine off before permanant damage can result.


ALSO -- "kind of scared" to push it just a little bit - but you run your GT at 450?
 
Heh... its not at that now, I did it to see if there was an improvement in 3dmark .

And yes MaMa I know, I will be going back to AMD in two years when its time to get a new machine. :D . But for now I'm happy and it does what I need it too multitask.

Oh and yest My first Proc was An AMD authientic 233mhz thats where I got the name.
 
If you get a BSOD - back it down and try again -- or increase the VCORE :) . The other thing to do is to OC from within Windows.with ClockGen. The AMD 64 community is really happy with it, and if it screws anything up you can always reboot.

Or- toss a backup drive (if you don't want to worry about hard drive corruption) into the machine and start going from there.
 
So, clockgen doesnt save anything, it just runs it at that speed when you enter the program...
 
Unless you set up a start up profile - no, it does not save anything.
 
Hmmm ok but I dont want to boost my agp speed with clockgen so :p I'll use bios and if anything goes wrong just reboot and install new drivers...... or clear cmos(explain how)
 
there's a couple ways to clear the CMOS...there should be a jumper on the board, so u just turn the pc on with it in the "clear" position, and then shut it off and put it back...

another way (i choose this one) is to take out the battery on the motherboard and unplug the cord from the PSU...let it sit there for like 20 minutes, u could get by with 10, i've done 5, but do 10 to make it sure...then just put the battery back, plug in the PSU, and boot and ur good to go!

Actually an even easier way is to unplug the power cord as stated, then turn the PSU switch back on and attempt to power on the board with no power going to it, that will drain out your capacitors and skip the waiting of 5-20 minutes. Remember to turn off your PSU before you plug it back into the wall. Then go ahead and put the battery back in, and switch it on.
Tah-dah!
 
You have a gigabyte dual bios board. Worst case scenario -- you wait an extra couple of seconds and it will boot.

Clockgen will not OC PCI/AGP on a board with working locks.

That's not the right CMOS clearing procedure...
Shut off computer, jump Clear CMOS jumpers, switch them back to normal position, turn on PC. The PC should not be functional with the jumper in the CLear CMOS position.

Also, you shouldn't have to wait that long if you take the battery out, I've never had a motherboard that doesn't clear the CMOS instantly upon removing the battery. You also don't need to unplug the power supply, unless you're afraid of accidentally turning it on and shorting things while you're poking around in there.
 
oops, sorry, my bad about the first one...i was kind of busy what with my dad yelling at me "get off the f**king computer...you spend way to much time on it" :rolleyes:...well, i didn't know that you didn't hafta wait that long...hmm....well, i just disconnect the power cord to be safe, i mean, why not?
 
Anyone know where the battery on it would be located or should I just look at my manual...
 
It's the little round silver thing that has a little silver clip...really hard to miss.
