how effective are glare filters?

i'm thinking of buying one for my 19" crt monitor. it really bothers my eyes right now if i use the comp for extended periods of time, like 3 hours or more. My refreash rate is set at 85, which is the highest, so that shouldn't be the problem.

so will glare filters help with the situation?
 
my experience with them is that they just reduce glare / darken the screen somewhat and kill any sort of side view you might have had, unless your looking straight at the front of the screen it can be blurry. This was quite a few years and and mabe the technology has advanced some, i dunno. If you really really want to fix the problem the only solution is an LCD ;D
