How does RAID-5 compare to 0/1 speedwise

Raid 5 performs at roughly the speed of raid 0 of n-1 drives where n is the number of drives in the raid 5 array, for reads, for writes, it usually performs close to a single drive.

it will depend mostly on the controller and what type of interface the card is using (PCI, PCI-X, or PCI-E)

Speedwise for what application? For capturing video (for example) pretty well - it deals well with long sequential reads or writes. But random I/O like databases or games can quickly put the hurt on.

Controller: PROMISE SuperTrak EX8350 RTL PCI-Express x 4 SATA II Controller Card Link

i was thinking of configuring a multi-boot subsystem, original plan was for 2 150gig raptors in RAID-0, 150gig for each OS (XP64, MCE)

with vista coming along i figured i could setup the array with 3 partitions, 100 gig for each OS and leave one partition unformatted until vista arrives...

mulling it over it seemed a bit risky to have 3 OS installs all on a RAID-0 but raid-1 wont give me enough space so RAID-5 was a consideration (only have to buy 1 more drive) but it will mostly be used for gaming so i'll probably stick with the raid-0 and image all 3 partitions onto my ~2tb raid-5 storage array weekly...

QFT.

However, that write speed requires a decent CPU in the controller or a decent main CPU (and available cycles) if you do software RAID or some semi-software RAID such as SATA onboard raid.

Small reads at random locations can be drastically faster on RAID-5 compared to RAID-0 (which doesn't speed them up much if at all). This requires a smart RAID software, though.

why do you need 150GB for each OS?
