How does HL2 work with steam? Mods cost money?!

I was going to buy HL2 earlier today but walmart did not have any copies, nor any upc evidence that they even carry the game anymore. So i considered buying it off Steam. It appears as you have to buy each of the mods? Please tell me it ain't so. That's terrible. Looks like you can buy CS:S seperate from HL2 for 20bux

My real question is, if you purchase HL2, do you get access to the mods like CS:S, or do they cost an additional fee?
 
CS:S comes with HL2 when you buy it off steam.

day of defeat is free. etc.

It will come with CS:S and that's it IIRC. Somehow I got lucky and my free ATI voucher for a bronze package came with their entire back catalogue though :cool: I don't know if all the ATI voucher holders got the same package I did but I'm not complaining :D
 
DOD is for half life 1 DOD:S is for hl 2



This business of selling all the mods is complete bullshit in my opinion. Its going to ruin the half life 2 mod scene....remember all the crazy good stuff that came from half life 1? Yeah I doubt many people are gonna fork over $15 for something that, while definitely fun, is not worth paying for.

Not surprising

If you have a valid HL1 key, you can still download and play all of the HL1 mods for free.
The 'Source' versions of Counterstrike and Day of Defeat work a bit differently.
The basic Half Life 2 package (ie what you'll find on the shelf at the store, or what I believe valve calls the 'silver package' over steam) contains HL2 and Counter Strike Source.
Day of Defeat Source can be purchased for $20 as a stand alone product. It is not free to download. Or you can get the premium / gold package from steam that bundles all three, HL2, CS:S and DOD:S

You can also buy CS source as a stand alone if you don't want the HL2 component.

Any NEW mod for HL2 (ie anything user created this time around) is free to download and play. It's just that valve capitalised on the popularity of day of defeat and counter strike and turned them into commercial products this go around.

You know, the guy that's always in the way, spamming radio, irritating color decal, popping flashbangs and firing off rounds at his fellow teamates, while they're starting to engage into a firefight! Yes folks, i am that asshole. I am a team killing, nade spamming, porno tagging CS moron.

I was just wondering if valve will ban users for such behaivior? Or do you have to cheat to get a key ban?

Yes you have to cheat to get a key ban, however individual server admins won't take to you so kindly and you'll end up banned from their servers.

so, its NOT FREE....you must buy HL1 or a pack that offers it

Silver pack (or whatever they call it now) includes HL1 and all the old HL1-based games. I finally got to play Blue Shift when I bought HL2.

As for mods being sold: DOD is such a well-established mod that I don't see a problem with selling DOD:S. Team Fortress 2 was supposedly going to be sold, even though TF and TFC were free mods. A lot of work goes into this stuff and the developers are trying to make a career out of it. Look at it this way: if they get paid doing it, they can devote more time to it and produce more and better games of the type we like.

It's a shame Steam doesn't have better support for third-party mods, though. It'd be nice if there was a way to register them so they can be installed directly through Steam.
 
Keep an eye out in FutureShop. I found the collectors edition for half the price of the regular version of the game. Only way I would buy it personally. Havent even been able to play it cause I havent had time to haul my computer into work to connect it to the intarweeb.
 
Just buy the HL2 Silver Package and you'll be set.

It comes with HL2, CS:S, Day of Defeat: Source, and all the normal old games. All for 60.00

This happend to everyone who had a voucher and registered it with steam before HL2 was released; it was done cause HL2 was delayed. The whole HL1 catalog except blue shift was given, but earlier this year, they released Blue Shift too.
 
If you dont want the HL2 single player game (and want a disk) go get counter strike source stand alone, it comes with DOD source and HL2 deathmatch for $40

I got a couple copies of the GOTY edition, comes with hl2, CS:S, HL2DM and HL:S whoop d fucking do, HL:S. It's not bad. $49.95 :rolleyes:
 
FYI, silver package does not exist anymore, it was a limited time only

you have to get the valve pack or source premier
